In the halls of international climate talks, the battle is not only fought over emissions targets and finance pledges. A more insidious war is waged daily in newsrooms, on social media, and in public discourse. Its weapon is not carbon but confusion. Its aim is delay. Its masters? The sprawling coalition of fossil fuel interests, political opportunists, and digital platforms that thrive on lies more viral than truth.

Climate disinformation is not a glitch in the system—it is the system. Experts describe it as “organized lies,” meticulously crafted to obscure scientific reality, to weaken public trust, and to derail the urgent action needed to avert catastrophe. The problem is not new; oil companies were already downplaying their own research on global warming as early as the 1970s. But today, the sophistication of climate deception has evolved far beyond outright denial. It now cloaks itself in false solutions, pseudo-science, cultural warfare, and political populism.

The climate crisis is already here. Super typhoons devastate Philippine towns. Indonesian forests fall to bulldozers. Heatwaves scorch South Asia. Each delay narrative, each greenwashed ad, each smear against activists is not just misinformation—it is time stolen from the planet’s survival.

This is not just a war of science. It is a war of stories. And unless truth can be told with as much urgency and resonance as the lies, the world risks losing not only the climate fight but also the very foundation of trust in facts.

Because in the end, climate disinformation is not simply about the atmosphere—it is about democracy itself.

“You know what’s the real problem? Anyone can be a content creator, pero hindi naman alam ang etiquette.”

It’s a raw observation, but one that cuts straight into the heart of today’s digital landscape. The democratization of content creation—once hailed as the great equalizer of voices—has birthed not just storytellers and visionaries, but also opportunists who mistake influence for free loot.

No offense meant, but the truth stings: ang daming PR hoarder ngayon. Content creators who once cared about storytelling, creativity, and building authentic connections with audiences have been replaced—at least in large part—by a new breed whose primary motivation is simple: “Gusto ko lang makakuha ng free items.”

These are the individuals who flood events, sn**ch every press kit, and post the bare minimum. Genuine engagement? Nowhere to be found. Long-term brand loyalty? Forgotten. The craft has been reduced to clout-chasing and collecting freebies—polluting the industry with hollow voices that echo louder than the ones who actually deserve to be heard.

In Philippine media, few clashes reveal the deep fractures between journalism and public relations more starkly than the recent exchange between Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto and broadcast veterans Korina Sanchez and Julius Babao. At first glance, the controversy seems to revolve around whether a certain contractor family paid ₱10 million for favorable coverage. But peel away the noise, and the heart of the issue is far more enduring—and far more dangerous: the credibility of journalism itself.

Mayor Vico did not accuse the veteran journalists of violating the law. He did something more unsettling: he called out what he described as “shameful.” His words cut through the fog of denial and counter-denial, putting the spotlight not on payment, but on perception. And in journalism, perception is often reality.

The clash between Vico Sotto and the Sanchez-Babao camp is not merely gossip fodder. It is a mirror reflecting journalism’s deepest vulnerability in the age of influence. It forces us to ask uncomfortable questions: Who gets featured, and why? When is a story a story, and when is it PR? And most crucially, how much trust can the public still extend to media institutions whose stars blur those lines?

At the end of the day, journalism has only one shield—public trust. Once the audience begins to believe that stories can be bought, no denial, legal threat, or semantic distinction between “news” and “lifestyle” can restore it.

That is why Vico’s critique stings. It is not about ₱10 million. It is about credibility—the lifeblood of journalism, the very thing that makes people listen. Lose that, and the profession becomes indistinguishable from public relations.

And once journalism becomes PR, it stops being journalism at all.

PLEASE REPOST OR RESHARE THIS PRESS RELEASE (Tagalog version)

UMALOHOKAN Para Sa Kaalaman, Kalikasan at Kinabukasan
April 13, 2025

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Eric Raymundo, Mariella Amagan, at Josephine Cabatuando.

Vera Files, PPCRV, LENTE Philippines, EcoWaste Coalition, Partners for Affordable & Reliable Energy, BAN Toxics, Alkarock by Gift of Nature, CreatiVoices, at TV5.
