US Court Jails American Man for Life Over M¥rder of Nigerian Boxer Isaiah Olugbemi in Anne Arundel County, Maryland

A county court in Maryland, United States, has sentenced 37-year-old Nicholas Giroux to life imprisonment plus 20 years for the m¥rder of Nigerian-born amateur boxer, Isaiah Olugbemi.

Olugbemi, a decorated boxer and father, was found d+ad in June 2024 along Meadowmist Way, Odenton, Maryland, with multiple gunshot wo¥nds. Surveillance footage later revealed a white male confronting him with a handg¥n before f+ring several sh+ts and fleeing on foot.

Police arrested Giroux the following day after he confessed to the crime during questioning. He was subsequently charged with first- and second-degree m¥rder.

Delivering judgment on August 26, Judge Richard Trunnell handed Giroux life imprisonment for first-degree m¥rder, plus an additional 20 years for using a firearm in a crime of v+olence. The sentences will be served consecutively in a correctional facility.

Anne C**t Leitess, the state’s attorney for Anne Arundel County, described the k+lling as “a cr¥el and s£nseless m¥rder,” stressing that the punishment was appropriate.

“Mr. Olugbemi was a father and rising star in amateur boxing. This was what took the life of someone with great promise,” Leitess said. “The callousness and lack of remorse on the part of this defendant is really disturbing. He deserves this sentence. And to the family and friends of Mr. Olugbemi, I hope that today provides some sense of justice for this terrible ordeal.”

Olugbemi had a remarkable career as a Junior Olympics gold medalist, three-time Golden Gloves state champion, and two-time Open Regional champion.
