Hi folks! HMDT is obviously on hiatus again. I've been putting all of my energy into a brilliant nonpartisan nonprofit that works with election officials nationwide to secure elections, protect election workers, and push back on mis- and disinformation.

Part of that has involved producing a limited series podcast hosted by David Becker, one of the foremost election experts in the country. Listen at the link below.

If I'm able to get back to HMDT, it will be after the inauguration, but so much depends on so many things. Thanks for your support all these years—Dale

A limited-series podcast about how the civic act of counting votes became embroiled in deceit, rage, and insurrection - and how we can find our way back.

Schoolhouse Rock was always great. But the music from one particular episode has haunted us down the years.

At the beginning of today's episode, I mentioned that I worked on one for a month before getting bogged down and setting it aside (for now). It's based on the greatest question I ever got from a theory student: “I understand what a chord is, but I don't understand what they have to do with the music.”

Part of the challenge of the episode is illustrating just how great that question is. I'll get to it.

After a month at the mercy of an earworm, I found the cure. Then it all went wrong. This is how music does that.

Two years ago I took a hiatus from the How Music Does That podcast to focus on OnlySky. Now things have relaxed a bit, and I find myself missing the creative outlet of that show.

I decided I wouldn't even consider a relaunch until I had ten episode ideas. Yesterday I sat down to list some. Apparently I have 58. Heh.

So stand by for relaunch 🤓

A Podcast About How Music Does That

How Music Does That is a podcast about the astonishing fact that someone can make you feel intense and specific emotions just by arranging sounds in a certain way.

Since the show launched in September 2018, we’ve covered such topics as the evolution of cool, the element of surprise in music, why Barber’s Adagio breaks my heart, a bass line partly invented by Galileo’s dad, an interval so cool it was banned by the church for 1,000 years, John Williams, John Cage, Johnny Cash, and the Pokémon su***de song.
