Xmas coming early to Santa Monica residents! 😎

Following the City Council’s approval of zoning code changes seven weeks and two days ago, Santa Monica is poised to introduce recreational ma*****na sales this week.

Despite obtaining the permit in October 2021, the inaugural cannabis dispensary, the Local Cannabis Company, officially opened in June after a wait of over a year and a half. The application process initiated in December 2017, and notably, this marks more than 26 years since medical ma*****na legalization in California.

Situated at 925 Wilshire Blvd, the Local Cannabis Company is gearing up for an opening ceremony on the morning of Thursday, December 14. Howard Keum, Co-Founder and CEO of Calyx Peak, the parent company, shared insights, stating, “The store is going to carry every major brand in the cannabis industry. We have 33 parking spots out back and plenty of access points for public transportation.” Keum added that the official launch at 10 a.m. on Thursday will feature giveaways, goodie bags, first-time discounts, and brand promotions throughout the weekend.

Under the previous Santa Monica municipal code, only two dispensaries were allowed, catering exclusively to medical use. This means customers must present a doctor’s recommendation to make purchases. While a second approved dispensary, Harvest of Santa Monica at 1416 Wilshire Blvd, received approval in January 2022, it has yet to materialize.

Puff puff pass gramps! 😎

New research (Fernandez et al., 2023) reveals a surge in cannabis use among US adults aged 50–80 since 2020. 12.1% reported usage, with 34.2% using four or more days per week. Factors like alcohol use, unemployment, and unmarried status correlated with higher usage. Dr. Anne Fernandez warns of potential risks for this vulnerable age group. More focus needed from healthcare pros and policymakers. 📊

Starting January 1, California will implement new laws, AB 2188 and SB 700, expanding employment protections for cannabis users under the Fair Employment and Housing Act. Employers with five or more employees cannot penalize workers for off-duty cannabis use and are prohibited from asking applicants about past cannabis use, except for criminal history. The laws also prevent reprimanding workers for positive tests of "non-psychoactive cannabis metabolites," but employers can still screen for active THC and take disciplinary action for impairment at the workplace. Certain employers, like those in federally regulated industries, are exempt. Despite legalization in 2016, workplace discrimination against lawful cannabis users, especially affecting Black communities, remains an issue. California now joins seven other states with similar employment protection laws for cannabis users. What’s your thoughts?
