Happy Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. We are going to fill it with some incredible music from this week in Grateful Dead history.

After closing Winterland the year before, The Grateful Dead needed a place to host their year end party. They opted to move across the bay to the 5,400 seat Oakland Auditorium arena, later to be renamed Henry J Kaiser Center for the Arts.

On 12/26/79 they played the first of a five night run to close out the decade. The entire show caught the attention of Dick Latvalla who submitted it as the 5th release in the Dick's Pick's series.

We will hear nearly the entire second set in tonight's "Jam of the Week". It's a nearly two hour medley that fires on all cylinders. It so hot you can almost see the moisture on the halls of the arena.

Our "Flashback of the Week" is from 12/20/75 at Winterland with The Jerry Garcia Band featuring Nicky Hopkins. The show also featured The Keith and Donna Band and Kingfish. Many of us hoped it would turn into a Grateful Dead concert, since all the players were in attendance. Join us for an instrumental of a Christmas classic.

On the day after Christmas the band was scheduled to play in Dallas at SMU. Everyone was in attendance except Billy who was on a plane somewhere over Omaha. Without a rhythm section, Bob and Jerry performed a rare acoustic set.

The day after Christmas the band were in Southern California for a brief two day show at Legion Stadium in El Monte, CA. We will check out some 1970 Dead.

We start every night with some "Dead Vinyl" as we rediscover some of the bands catalogue.

Join me for another three-hour installment of Grateful Dead music. We will be airing “Sunday Night Dead” on The PIG from 6–9 PM PDT on KPIG FM 107.5 and Freedom KPYG FM 94.9 in Cayucos/SLO. You can also stream it at www.kpig.com.

07/12/2025

Looking forward to spending some time with you this evening sharing the music of the Grateful Dead from the second week in December. We will return to The Felt Forum for tonight's "Flashback of the Week" from 54 years ago. Pigpen delivers on this night at the MSG annex with a Howlin' Wolf cover, taking it to spaces the blues great could never have imagined.

Tonight's "Jam of the Week" is from 1969, just a short time before the band would go into the studio to record one of their most beloved albums, "Workingman's Dead". The band was still able to deliver the psychedelic goods while also exploring "Bakersfield" Country. Hear the show from Thelma in Los Angeles from 12/11/69.

We will take a detour for a couple of stops in St Louis, the bands home away from home for much of the 70's. In the early 70's the band played the more intamate Fox Theater before making it to the larger Kiel Auditorium. We will hear shows from both venues from '71 and '79 respectively.

It didn't take long for Jerry Garcia to get back to work after the Dead played the final shows at Winterland in October before the hiatus. Jerry was quick to form a new band with his old pals Merle Saunders and John Kahn along with saxophonist Martin Fiero and drummer Ron Tutt. Legion of Mary which began that December would continue through the rest of the year and into 1975. Tonight we catch up with the band in Portland's Paramount Theater from 12/14/74.

We start tonight as always with some "Dead Vinyl" including some music for the holiday's featuring Pigpen covering Chuck Berry and a Kaleidoscope Christmas featuring Michael Falzarano and Jorma and Jack, with a little "Boogie Woogie Christmas".
