Guinea’s junta has cancelled over 50 mining permits for gold, bauxite, diamonds, and graphite. The decision comes as Mamady Doumbouya, the junta leader, is seeking greater control over the sector since coming to power in a September 2021 coup. The decree also ordered permits to be withdrawn from companies that do not comply with the country’s mining code. No reason has been offered for the decision. Foreign companies have until the end of May to submit proposals for building refineries to ensure local processing of the mineral bauxite. Guinea is one of the world’s poorest countries despite having plenty of natural resources.

Burkina Faso Implements Prison Reform.

“From today our prisoners will be working in our Agricultural sector while their sentences are reduced, our laws must represent African values”
- Ibrahim Traoré

According to the new criminal law in Burkina Faso, prisoners and those awaiting sentences can work in agriculture, with a month of work equivalent to a three-month reduction in sentence.
A month of work equals 3 months off their sentence!

This innovative approach prioritizes rehabilitation, agricultural development, and restorative justice.

Traore adds that most African nations are still using the colonial punitive punishment and rehabilitation methods that African slave’s were being subjected by the colonial masters.

has made remarkable strides with its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project. The country recently became the first in East Africa to establish an electric railway system, setting a significant milestone in regional infrastructure development.

The electrified railway section between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma spans approximately 440 km. With this achievement, Tanzania now ranks 6th in Africa for the longest electrified railway system.

Currently, 15% of Tanzania’s railway network is electrified, placing the country 2nd in Africa in terms of the percentage of electrified railway lines.

This 440km railway line was completed at a cost of around $3.1 billion. Trains on this line can reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h, reducing travel time between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma from 10 hours to just 4 hours.
