The Crowdfunding Stage for The Dark Scene 500 is now complete. We didn't quite make our target, but this wasn't an 'All or Nothing' crowdfund, and we got close enough to continue as originally planned.

Thank you to everyone who supported the project, by contributing themselves and/or sharing the link and encouraging others to check it out. I'll be getting in touch with everyone who selected an 'Audience Participation' reward shortly to arrange details. This will be the final content before the book goes for typesetting and then printing. I'm talking to the typesetter tomorrow to arrange next steps and agree timescales.

For those of you who weren't able to contribute at this time, don't worry - the book will be available for sale once published - ebook or printed options are planned. For now, my focus is on getting this project over the line.

Last call for The Dark Scene 500 crowdfunder - there's a little over 24 hours to go. The story of the scene told through its most notable songs - from the early-era classics to many of the bands playing at places like Amphi this weekend - including many not even acknowledged by scene histories already in print.

There are still some rewards to claim - these end tomorrow. After this, my focus turns to getting this ready to print.

Thank you to everyone who helped by pledging support and/or spreading the work in recent weeks.

The Dark Scene 500 is a book telling the story of the gothic, industrial and related styles through its most notable and influential songs.

For those of you still trying to make your minds up about this project - you might be wondering what makes this book different from the many others released recently. Here's some of the unique selling points:

- We're not just focusing on one or two subgenres - the book covers as wide as possible array of scene music as it's possible to fit in a single volume. Whether you like EBM, extreme noise, darkwave, club-oriented industrial or just good old-fashioned goth, there's something here for you.

- Neither are we just focusing on the 'golden age' of goth or industrial (late 70s to early 90s) - the book covers music right through to the 2020s, including many styles and era disregarded by mainstream music journalism, and many project from outside the UK and USA, the countries traditionally dominating English-language music writing.

- The book has been written to appeal to a wide an audience as possible with a quickfire writing style making it easy to dip and out. It's not an academic study, instead treating music as something to be enjoyed!

There's still enough time to claim a reward....

Thanks to all my early supporters - now that WGT has passed, it seems like a good moment to remind you of my Crowdfunder for The Dark Scene 500. We're 40% there now - whilst I'll be selling the book after the crowdfund is done as well, the perks (named supporter, list your favourite songs) are exclusive to this phase of the project.

So, it's finally time. After nearly 4 years, I'm in the homeward stretch and it's time to open out this project to the world.

My book, The Dark Scene 500 has been written, edited and is currently being proofread. Publication is in sight, but to see the project over the line, I'm seeking your support. Get your pre-orders in, maybe get listed as a supporter, or even contribute your own list of scene favourites. Whatever you can offer will be put to good use.

It was a slow summer on the writing front, but things have woken up since. I’m now working with an editor on the ‘Dark Scene 500’ text. Piece by piece, we’re getting my writing into a fit state to publish. 500 songs that define a music scene is quite a number to get through but we are well under way.

I’m also considering the next steps – self-publishing and then promotion. I’m going to be contacting all the people I know who I think may be able to help, once the distractions of Christmas are over. However, I’m also open to suggestions for how to promote this book to a wide an audience as possible. If you’re interested in what I’m doing and think you can help (or know someone who can), please get in touch.

A few bits of news on the writing front. I’m now looking into editing and publishing (probably self-publishing) for the “Dark Scene 500” book, subjects that are entirely new to me. I have a few leads, but if anyone knows anyone who can help with either, please get in touch, as the internet is full of conflicting advice! All I’ve learned so far is ‘steer clear of vanity publishers’.

Whilst I’ve been waiting for responses, I’ve updated the existing Listerners Guides on this site, with plans to write a new one soon. This includes releases up to 2024, included the long-awaiting end to Project Pitchfork’s most recent trilogy. If you haven’t checked them recently, take a look at the Articles Page.

Articles Listener’s Guides Listener’s Guides are long-form articles that work through an entire band’s backcatalogue, pick out the highlights, lowlights and general trends in their overall style, and makes suggestions as to where to begin in terms of checking out their music. Apoptygma Berzerk...

The benefit of working online is you get to update old articles and bring them up to present-day relevance. Here's one originally published in 2018 that's been extended to tell the complete story right up to me writing this now....

Article Infest – A Personal Retrospective by Terminates Here|Published August 28, 2018 This is an article I wrote on Facebook shortly after Infest 2018. It’s been slight tweaked for website purposes, but is essentially a retrospective to mark the 20th anniversary of the event (even if I didn’t...
