Paul Henry is making a high-profile return to TVNZ, taking on hosting duties for The Chase New Zealand. The veteran broadcaster will front four primetime specials of the quiz show, marking his first role at the network since departing Breakfast in 2010.

Announced live on Breakfast, Henry said it felt “weird” to be back but couldn’t pass up the chance to host what he called the “biggest franchise” quiz show in the world. “You can play along at home as easily as if you’re a contestant,” he said, highlighting the format’s broad appeal.

While acknowledging the impact of UK host Bradley Walsh, Henry said they’re “quite similar” in personality and that he plans to support contestants and have fun. “People might see a slightly different side to me… I can be enormously charming when I put my mind to it.”

The NZ specials will be produced by ITV Studios Australia and filmed in Sydney. TVNZ has yet to confirm which Chasers will appear, though Henry named Anne Hegerty as his favourite.

Air dates are still to come.
