Plagiarism is plagiarism with or without copyright. So what does copyright do? It makes one's ideas private property. But, generally speaking, an author doesn't own their own words any more than a student owns an idea they express at a university. Authors, generally, only get a small fraction of proceeds from their books from traditional publishing companies, and the publishing companies own the words for a lifetime, and can choose to share them or to let them be erased. Institutions integral to capitalism own and censor ideas. This is why in Rebel Hearts Publishing books, you do not find a copyright symbol. If Rebel Hearts Publishing is victim of a corporate takeover or buyout, it owns no ideas, just the few books in stock. And any author, and any person honoring the author, can reprint without consequence.
