Campus Citizen We are IUI’s independent, student-run media, promising real journalism created with passion and integrity. Follow along to support our journey! You.

The Campus Citizen has been IUPUI’s only student-run independent media outlet since 2011. We strive to provide a voice for the diverse student body at IUPUI. Beyond the written word, we also serve as a distributor of other student media, including podcasts, photography, and videos. The Campus Citizen traces its legacy as an independent student news publication to 1969, when the consolidation of In

diana University-Indianapolis and Purdue University-Indianapolis created the need for a unified student newspaper. As a result, The Sagamore was born in 1971, out of The Component, an offshoot of Purdue West Lafeyette’s The Exponent, and Onomatopoeia, IU-Indianapolis’s combined student newspaper. Throughout its short tenure, The Campus Citizen has reported on corruption and a lack of transparency in student organizations, massive errors in student meal plans, and investigated sexual assault on campus, all the while keeping a spotlight on all the good things being done on our campus by our students and staff. After transitioning to an all-online media source in the Fall of 2015, and finally transitioning to the current site in Spring of 2022, we have been able to cut costs and market efficiently through social media. But our work is never over. We hope to continue growing to accompany the diverse audience on our campus of nearly 30,000 and ensure that new voices are able to be heard, while continuing to bridge the gap between the campus and the surrounding Indianapolis community. All the while, never forgetting who we serve.

The Department of Homeland Security announced on August 5 the new partnership with Indiana to expand the amount of beds used for detainees of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) at the Miami Correctional Center, a maximum-security prison, about 70 miles north of Indianapolis. Following the same ideals as “Alligator Alcatraz,” it will be called “Speedway Slammer,” in reference to Indiana’s racing culture.

Colleges across Indiana, including Indiana University and IVY Tech, are quietly altering– and in some cases dismantling– Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs and language following recent political pressure and new state policies.

On January 15, 2025, Gov. Mike Braun issued executive order 25-14, calling for the dismantlement of DEI initiatives in all state agencies. This order states that all state executive branch agencies are not to use “state funds, property or resources” to support anything DEI related.

Claira Brizendine, an environmental science major, walks through the cool air around campus every Monday and Tuesday to look for dead birds that have crashed into
campus buildings. During her walks, she finds two to three lifeless birds in the bushes. She takes notes on what building they have flown into, the time she found them, and the type of bird. Brizendine, a junior at IUI, is an intern participating in the The Bird Window Strike Project with the Center of Earth and Environmental Science (CEES).
