UPDATE 10/31: Additional donation sites listed below.

Gig Harbor families will soon lose access to food.

Due to the federal government shutdown, roughly 15% of Pierce County residents are facing food insecurity and hunger. This includes our 11,000 federal workers who are currently not receiving a paycheck and our 115,000 residents who receive SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program) benefits that are set to lose funding on Nov. 1.

Additionally, the WIC (Women Infant and Child) program will lose funding mid-November. There are nearly 2,500 infants in Pierce County who depend on WIC for their formula. Without WIC funding, families will face the possibility that their babies will starve.

Together we can (and will) help. Support the city’s formula & food drives to support local families who are being gravely affected by the government shutdown. Every contribution helps a neighbor stay fed, housed, and healthy.

Here’s how to help:

Gig Harbor now has a budget deficit. Does retracting even more on growth, raising our sales taxes, and increasing B&O taxes, seem like the best way to align the budget?

The county is taking comment on a plan to remove Purdy from the urban growth area, a designation which made it an annexation target.
