American Persimmon trees are a huge part of the ecosystem at Home Upon The Hill.

Persimmons are a valuable wildlife food source, especially in fall and early winter when many other fruits are gone. Both the fruit and, to a lesser extent, the tree itself attract a wide range of animals.

Some of the most common visitors include:

* White-tailed deer – One of the biggest consumers of fallen persimmons. They often seek out trees when the fruit ripens.
* Raccoons – They readily eat ripe fruit, including fruit that has fallen to the ground.
* Opossums – Common nighttime visitors to persimmon trees.
* Coyotes – They frequently include persimmons in their diet during fruiting season.
* Squirrels – They eat ripe fruit and may carry pieces away.
* Rabbits – They sometimes feed on fallen fruit.

Many bird species also feed on persimmons, including:

* Wild turkeys
* Northern mockingbirds
* American robins
* Cedar waxwings
* Blue jays
* Crows
* Woodpeckers
* Cardinals

Insects are attracted as well:

* Bees may visit the flowers in spring.
* Butterflies and moths use the tree in various ways depending on the species.
* Fruit flies, beetles, and yellowjackets are often attracted to overripe or damaged fruit.
