Silas Hogan made three attempts at 'Trouble at home blues'. The original recording was made in July 1962 by J.D. Miller and saw release as Excello 2221 that year. In January the following year he recorded 'Here they are again'. Pretty much the same song and Miller didn't release it. In April 1964 he recorded the song again, this time calling it 'More trouble at home'. That version also stayed in the can.

You have to admire his persistance.

Little Walter's first recording session was in 1947 for Bernie Abrams with Othum Brown and two of the four track saw release on Abrams' tiny Ora Nelle label. His second session was not until May 1949 with Sunnyland Slim on piano and Muddy Waters on guitar. The two tunes recorded that day were released as Tempo-Tone 1002.

John Brim was originally from Kentucky. Like many from the south made the great migration north, ending up in Chicago in 1945. His first recording session was in Detroit, backing Big Maceo. His first for Chess was in March 1953, a month or so after the death of Maceo with a band that included Little Walter, the Myers brothers and Freddy Below. Two tracks recorded that day. These were given a Checker catalogue number but never issued (Rattlesnake b/w It Was a Dream, Checker 769, April 1953).

Chess withdrew it after Don Robey of Peacock records slapped an injustion on Sam Phillips of Sun. Not long after Big Mama Thornton had recorded Hound Dog for Peacock, Rufus Thomas Jr recorded a cover, Bear Cat, for Sun (which resulted in said injuction). Brim's version, Rattlesnake, was pretty much a carbon copy of the original so the Chess brothers were probably wise to chicken out.

I go to church on Sunday, prayer meetin' too
But on Saturday night I got my sinnin' to do
I keep in step with my preacher ev'ry day in the week
But on Saturday night I got my sinnin' to seek
An' I roll bones, be it wrong, be it right
I'm a crap shootin' sinner on Saturday night

The fact that you might like George Thorogood doesn't necessarily make you a hoon, but man, it sure shortens the odds. This, however, is great. A 2015 release of the original mix of Thorogood's 1976 debut; Hound Dog Taylor style with just two guitars and drums. The bass on the original release was added later at the behest of the record company. Just quietly, a much better album.

Cash Box described 'Kissing at Midnight' as

"Rhythmic blues with the greatest appeal to the southern market."

The 'S. Thompson' credited here is Sylvester Thompson, aka Syl Johnson. Johnson had a bit to do with Billy Boy Arnold's early career at Vee Jay. He had played guitar and brother Matt Thompson bass on Arnold's previous Vee Jay release, 'Rockin Itis.'
