First printed in Cambridge, 1912, as part of E. G. Swain’s collection The Stoneground Ghost Tales, “Bone to His Bone” slips you into a candle‑lit vicarage library at midnight, where a self‑turning 17th‑century gardening manual sends the insomniac Reverend Batchel digging beneath an ancient ilex—and straight into the unfinished business of a long‑dead predecessor whose single lost arm‑bone still keeps the parish from sleeping easy.

First published in the Christmas Number of Chapman’s Magazine of Fiction in London in December 1895, “Number Ninety” is a razor‑paced Victorian chiller in which a swaggering New York engineer bets he can spend a night in Charleston’s most notorious vacant townhouse—only to be lured from his fire‑lit bedroom to a phantom Regency banquet whose glittering guests evaporate at the Latin grace, leaving him to face the house’s true, murderous secret before dawn.

First unveiled in the Radio Times (Southern edition, 28 December 1928), E. F. Benson’s “Atmospherics” whisks readers to a snow‑shrouded Sussex weekend where a brand‑new portable wireless set suddenly tunes not to dance music, but to the deafening cheers, musket fire and marching bands of King George II’s 1736 visit—broadcast live across two centuries. A single eerie evening, a crackling dial and voices that refuse to stay buried in time make this miniature ghost story as unsettling as it is unforgettable.

A frail young woman from the city is sent to recuperate on the tidal coast of Maine. Her lodging is the isolated farmhouse of Miss Catherine Ferry, known locally as “Lady Ferry.” Neighbours whisper that the old woman has lived for more than a century—ever since Revolutionary days—and that she moves as comfortably between the realms of the living and the dead as she does across her mist‑shrouded fields.
While the narrator regains her health, she observes Lady Ferry’s uncanny strength, hears cryptic references to bygone wars, and once glimpses the old woman crossing the moonlit river as if answering a summons. The doctor and villagers offer no definitive explanation. When Lady Ferry finally disappears (whether by death or some ghostly passage), she leaves behind only a serene, empty house and the narrator’s enduring sense that time and mortality are not quite fixed.

It tells the tale of Malcolm Malcolmson, a young scholar seeking solitude to prepare for his exams who rents an isolated old Jacobean house known locally as the Judge’s House.
