THE PLACEBO EFFECT
“History” is not the wars, the politics, those maritime adventures, retro-architecture…History is music.
If you want someone to relive any particular point in history, ask them what MUSIC defined that era for them and they will have a ready answer.
MUSIC is our best connection to history. Everything that was happening in that era, will materialize with a song. Nothing visual required, just a single song or a record album.
EVERYONE has their own soundtrack. Everyone can make a Life Playlist which will be unique to them.
When I came to L.A. in the mid-80’s to work as a scenic artist, I was straight outta NYC, and I was listening to RUN DMC.
But Los Angeles had a completely different energy which entered my skin like musical osmosis, largely because the house I was sharing was inhabited by members of the band Saqqara Dogs, author William Gibson, a musician named SYNC 66, a girl who was dating Peter Gabriel, and a composer named Dumas. There was electronic music and poetry twenty-five/7, and there was The Meat Puppets cassette on someone’s boombox in our Venice Beach bungalow.
In fact, I heard the name, “The Meat Puppets” all the time. I couldn’t name a song then, but I knew the music when I heard it at TOOL in L.A., or the Roxy, or Whiskey-a-Go-Go. I did not know anything about them.
But when I think of my life in East Hollywood in the late 1980’s, I hear “Plateau”.
On Saturday night (10/26) Placebo Records will be hosting The Meat puppets for a discussion and a performance. If ever there was an opportunity for me to learn the history of this band and this era, it will be right here in Phoenix, the home of this iconic band.
Music is the true chronicle of history. It cannot be altered, cannot be counterfeited like Fake News. It lives in vinyl, and disc, and tape, and in the people who will be on stage at Placebo Records on Saturday night.
Doors at 6 PM, program starts at 7 PM.
If you are one of those people who says "Music is the most important thing in my life", but you haven't been to a live show in a year, Be there.
