“She jumped from her home when she heard that 14 armed robbers had come to her house. She didn’t die on the spot. She went to the hospital, and she was rejected,” Arise News presenter Ojy Okpe recounted while narrating the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of her colleague, Sommie Maduagwu.
Maduagwu, a former beauty queen and staff of Arise News, died after an armed robbery attack at her 16-apartment building in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday, September 29.
According to reports, about 15 armed robbers invaded the premises, prompting Maduagwu to jump from her apartment in a desperate attempt to escape. Though she survived the fall, she sustained severe injuries.
She was rushed to Maitama District Hospital, where she was allegedly left unattended as staff demanded identification before treatment could begin. She later died from her injuries.
The building’s security guard, who tried to resist the robbers, was also shot during the attack and succumbed to his wounds, leaving behind a wife and a young son.
Maduagwu’s passing has plunged her family, colleagues, and friends into mourning, with tributes pouring in for the late journalist and beauty queen.
