Machine Oil and Upright Bass – the BARNYARD BALLERS invent a new kind of sick sound on „When Pigs Fly“
Do you remember Songs like „Take Your Pants Of“ or „Ugly Chicks“ from the BARNYARD BALLERS‘ 2001 Album „Nudi Bar Blues“? As a counterpart for fun country-doodle-music like „Hole In My Bucket“ they marked a harsher side of the band, that included punk- and metal elements. That kept in mind I was not expecting a standard psychobilly album, when I gave „When Pigs Fly“ (released via Dandruff In My Mouth) a first spin. But to be honest: What started with the opener „Acid Bastard“ hit me hard anyway. What was that? Industrial-Metal that reminds me of MINISTRY meets psychedelic guitars and an upright bass (played by NEKROMANTIX‘ Kim Nekroman who had also a guest apperance on „Nudi Bar Blues“. Also Johnny Bowler (GET SMART, GUANA BATZ) makes a guest appearance later). It certainly is weird stuff. But cool – if you are open to different musical styles, as I am.
Then you will also enjoy the groove of „Run Or Die“ that makes drummer Rick Stojak release his voodoo, while mastermind Rob Kwait who does all the vocals here, delivers some evil words. This is not easy listening music, but there’s parts that are bonding with catchy pieces of melody while the rhythm hypnozizes. Titles like „Insane Asylum“ (completely different vocal performance here in the chorus) or „Notorious Pig“, written by Rick Stojak and sounding a bit like Marilyn Mansons Version of a Rockabilly stroll, sindicate, that the lyrics are not especially friendly and clean. Satan? Kissing girls with gonorrhea? Sh****ng a mom? You might find it here („Bests Friends Mom“ has a wild and remarkable bass line).
I already mentioned „Nudi Bar Blues“ (2001) and „Ugly Chicks“. Here weg et „Ugly Chix“, a new and better sounding version that keeps the metallic aggression oft he original but leaves more space for the bass. The slapping is more prominent here. „Satan“ is a dark industrial soundscape with vocals. As far from Psychobilly or Punk as it can get. And then… The final Song: „Anything For Beer“ features a swinging, ragtime, billy mixture that sounds, as if Kwait would ask: Guys? What’s up? Relax. Enjoy. Here’s what we all love… while not regretting a single note of the crazy stuff that happened before and could maybe suit well as a soundtrack for a Rob Zombie movie.
„When Pigs Fly“ is extremely open minded music and needs open minded listeners. If you are looking for any classic billy patterns, you have to wait for the last number. If you have fun detecting traces of billy attitude and all things related in songs that are delicately shabby, dirty, rude and powerful without being particularly fast, this is the real thing for you. It is a special record that is physically released 30 years after the BARNYARD BALLERS‘ debut. It is interesting and different and available in the colours black and transparent violet, yellow or crystal with a yellow stint, each limited to 100 copies.

Maschinenöl und Kontrabass – die BARNYARD BALLERS kreieren auf „When Pigs Fly“ einen neuen, wunderbar kranken Sound.
Erinnert ihr euch an Songs wie „Take Your Pants Of“ oder „Ugly Chicks“ vom 2001er Album „Nudi Bar Blues“ der BARNYARD BALLERS? Als Gegenstück zu witziger Country-Doodle-Musik wie „Hole In My Bucket“ markierten sie die härtere Seite der Band, die Punk- und Metal-Elemente aufwies. So hatte ich auch kein typisches Psychobilly-Album erwartet, als ich „When Pigs Fly“ (veröffentlicht über Dandruff In My Mouth) zum ersten Mal auflegte.: Was mit dem Opener „Acid Bastard“ losbrach, traf mich dennoch hart. Was war das? Industrial-Metal, der mich an MINISTRY erinnert, trifft auf psychedelische Gitarren und einen Kontrabass (bearbeitet durch Kim Nekroman von den NEKROMANTIX, der auch auf „Nudi Bar Blues“ als Gast zu hören war. Auch Johnny Bowler (GET SMART, GUANA BATZ) hat später einen Gastauftritt). Wow. Das hier ist richtig schräges Zeug. Aber cool – wenn man, wie ich, offen für verschiedene Musikstile ist.
Dann wird man auch den Groove von „Run Or Die“ genießen, einem Song, der Schlagzeuger Rick Stojak seinen Voodoo entfesseln lässt, während Mastermind Rob Kwait, der den gesamten Gesang übernimmt, ein paar böse Worte von sich gibt. Sicher keine Easy-Listening-Musik, aber es gibt Passagen, die mit eingängigen Melodien verbunden sind, während der Rhythmus hypnotisch durchballert. Titel wie „Insane Asylum“ (völlig andere Gesangsdarbietung hier im Refrain) oder „Notorious Pig“, geschrieben von Rick Stojak und vom Klangbild her ein bischen wie Marilyn Manson beim Rockabilly-Stroll, deuten darauf hin, dass die Texte nicht besonders freundlich und stubenrein sind. Satan? Knutschen mit Mädels die einen Tripper haben? Eine Mutter vö**ln? Dies und ähnliches könnte Euch auf dieser Scheibe begegenen. („Bests Friends Mom“ besticht übrigens durch eine wilde und bemerkenswerte Basslinie).
Ich habe „Nudi Bar Blues“ (2001) und „Ugly Chicks“ bereits eingangs erwähnt. Hier kommt „Ugly Chix“, eine neue und besser klingende Version, die die metallische Aggressivität des Originals beibehält, aber mehr Raum für den Bass lässt. Das Slapping ist hier deutlicher zu hörem. „Satan“ ist eine düstere Industrial-Klanglandschaft mit Gesang. So weit weg von Psychobilly oder auch Punk, wie es eben geht. Und dann… Das Finale: „Anything For Beer“ bietet eine swingende Ragtime-Billy-Mischung, die klingt, als würde Kwait fragen: Leute? Was geht? Entspannt euch. Genießt es. Das hier lieben wir alle… ohne auch nur eine einzige Note des verrückten Krams zu bereuen, der vorher passiert ist, und der vielleicht ganz gut für den Soundtrack zu einem Rob Zombie-Film geeignet wäre.
„When Pigs Fly“ ist extrem stiloffene Musik und braucht aufgeschlossene Hörer. Wer auf klassische Billy-Muster hofft, muss auf die letzte Nummer warten. Wenn Ihr Spaß daran habt, unterschwellige Spuren von Billy-Artigem und Artverwandtem in Songs zu entdecken, die formvollendet schäbig, schmutzig, rüde und kraftvoll sind, ohne dabei besonders schnell zu sein, dann ist das hier genau das Richtige für Euch. Es handelt sich um eine besondere Platte, die nun 30 Jahre nach dem Debüt der BARNYARD BALLERS physisch erscheint. Sie ist spannend und andersartig. Und in Schwarz und transparentem Violett, Gelb oder Klarsicht mit gelbem Einschlag erhältlich, jeweils limitiert auf 100 Exemplare.
