CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN DEL NORTE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION, DNUSD STUCK OVER SALARY INCREASES

Contract negotiations between the union representing local teachers and Del Norte Unified School District have hit an impasse with a dispute over salaries being the primary roadblock.

DNUSD is offering a one-time cash bonus of $750 per certificated employee. Del Norte Teachers Association negotiators are pushing for ongoing salary increases for union members. But with COVID dollars having run out and the potential for millions in budget cuts in the next few months, DNUSD officials say the district can’t afford the union’s ask.

BREATHING LIFE INTO THE LOCAL FIGHT AGAINST SEXUAL ASSAULT; DEL NORTE SART TEAM WINS GRANT FOR NURSES, TRAINING, INTERVIEWING EQUIPMENT

---

Scrawled on a whiteboard inside A’Lissa Scott’s office at the Del Norte County Courthouse is the following quote: “Children of all ages can tell us what they know if we ask them the right questions in the right way.”

Taken from a manual on the best practices of child forensic interviewing, the 30-year-old quote reminds Scott and her colleague Amanda LeBlanc that much of their job is about allowing, and trusting, sexual assault survivors to make the decision that’s right for them.

“One big thing about mentoring is there is no victim-blaming. That went out in the ‘70s or ‘80s, or it should have,” said Scott, a field investigator in the county’s Victim Witness Center. “We bring kids in that are going to have to testify and if they say, ‘I don’t want to do this’ We are never going to force them to testify.”

Curry County’s Finance Director Faces Criticism Over Proposed Employment Agreement

Curry County commissioners declined to renew an employment contract with their finance and human resources director, Kiena Wolf, at last week’s meeting.

Wolf, who was in attendance at that meeting, found herself on the defensive against critics arguing that the county couldn’t afford the expense.

One critic, Michele Martin, a member of a Facebook group called Citizens For Curry Justice, criticized Wolf’s proposed salary of $130,000 per year and said the $15,000 professional development allowance it calls for is more than the training budget at the Curry County Sheriff’s Office.

Rod Palmquist, a representative for Teamsters Local 223, which represents sheriff’s office employees, repeated the statement regarding the training budget for Wolf’s department, comparing it with that of the sheriff’s office. He told commissioners that the proposed employment agreement prioritized bureaucracy “over the very safety of the community you were elected to serve.”

Cal Poly Humboldt Prof. Discusses Why Today’s 7.0 Temblor Spawned A 6-8 Inch Tsunami In Crescent City

Lori Dengler said she wasn’t surprised that Thursday’s magnitude 7.0 earthquake only produced a tsunami that topped out at roughly 8 inches in Crescent City.

But, while Dengler, geology professor emeritus at Cal Poly Humboldt, is still going through the reports and is speaking with the media about today’s temblor, she said one of the outcomes might be a rethinking of how the U.S. approaches tsunami evacuations.

“The Tsunami National Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska has developed a template for if an earthquake happens here and it’s in this magnitude range, this is what we do,” Dengler, whose expertise is in geophysics, earthquake and tsunami hazards and hazard reduction, told Redwood Voice Community News on Thursday. “Because this earthquake was so relatively close to the coast and their preliminary magnitude was 7.3, it immediately triggered a tsunami warning from basically Santa Cruz to Central Oregon.”

This includes the San Francisco Bay Area, though most seismologists knew that the tsunami the quake would produce wouldn’t be large enough to get through the narrow mouth, Dengler said. Still, “we all must err on the margin of safety,” she noted.

Council Chooses Gateway Design, Urges Staff To Engage With Businesses Before Embarking On Street Name Change

After a community outreach campaign netted 561 survey responses and more than 100 shares on Facebook, Crescent City councilors chose a gateway that draws on its residents’ relationship with the ocean.

Seventy-six percent of those who responded to the city’s survey also supported changing Front Street’s name to Beachfront Drive, Crescent City Manager Eric Wier told the Council on Monday. But the potential name change could disadvantage local businesses, Wier said, costing them thousands of dollars.

“The hard costs are somewhere between $7,000 on the low end for the permitting, the licensing, all the changing of business cards — all those types of pieces,” he said, adding that he spoke with two business owners on Front Street. “Then if you get into search engine optimization and the actual loss of revenue if that’s done the wrong way or at the wrong time, it could be tens of thousands of dollars. Upwards of $50,000. It’s not a small item and it should be one that’s dealt with carefully and intentionally.”
