I'm broadcasting music on my show that I consider to be Music for Our Time. The program began with David Maslanka's St. Francis: Two Studies for Wind Ensemble, my homage to Pope Francis and his concern for the environment, the poor, and the marginalized. Then, Kevin Walczyk's Symphony No. 5, Freedom From Fear. His symphony serves as a plea for civility, and from the tyranny of war, and despots who marginalize the rights of immigrants, orphans, and people of all races to live free of fear. The program closes with Nigel Clarke's Symphony No. 1, "A Richer Dust." It is a sad statement of what it means to live with violence and extremism, the constant companions of human history. I led the Salem Symphonic Winds in a performance of this symphony in 2018. At that time, we would never have believed that our country would be the source of fear to immigrants and to many citizens of our country. Nigel recently commented to me that this work is unlikely to be programmed now, especially in our country. He has expressed his deep concern for our country and the loss of our leadership in the causes of human rights, freedom, and democracy.
