Dear white allies,
She had to build a whole reputation before she felt safe enough to ask for real money. Prove herself twice. Get management. Have private conversations with other women just to find out what “fair” even looks like.

Here’s the ally move: If you’re the one hiring, budgeting, or approving the deal, pay Black women what the work is worth before they have to ask twice.

Say the number. Every time.

Black women have literally needed a law to wear their own hair to work.

Not a company policy. Not an HR memo. A LAW — the CROWN Act — because braids, locs, and natural texture were (and in some places still are) grounds for getting sent home, passed over, or fired.

Meanwhile, most of us have never once had to ask ourselves “is my hair professional enough?” before a meeting.

That’s the gap. That’s what privilege looks like in practice — not having to think about it.

Your kid already knows more than you think. The question is whether they can talk to you about it.

Black families are raising children in a political climate with real, rising risk — and the answer isn’t fear, it’s dialogue. No topic too much. No question too nosy.

Then take that energy to the phone. We live in an open carry state where a gun is easier to get than a license. That’s not random — that’s legislation, and legislation can change.

A week ago, I stood in a room with Twina at the Ocasio-Feliciano event, and I need y’all to understand something: grief doesn’t stay quiet for long when a mother decides to turn it into pressure.

We weren’t there to just honor her son. We were there to talk about what comes next — gun violence prevention, legislation, and the uncomfortable truth that “thoughts and prayers” were never a policy.

I got to speak that night about something I believe deeply: allyship isn’t just showing up with a candle. It’s showing up with a plan. It’s calling your reps. It’s staying loud past the news cycle. It’s remembering that midterm season isn’t background noise — it’s the actual mechanism for change.

So here’s your assignment: don’t let this be a moment you scrolled past. Vote like a mother. Organize like one too.
