Great performance!

This week in 1953, five bebop legends took the stage at Toronto’s Massey Hall for what was to later become known as “the greatest jazz concert ever.”

The group featured Charlie Parker (alto sax), Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet), Bud Powell (piano), Charles Mingus (double bass), and Max Roach (drums) and the recording of the show, THE QUINTET: JAZZ AT MASSEY HALL, is widely regarded as one of the greatest live jazz recordings of all time, being inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame in 1995.

10 years ago today on January 29, 2016, Dr. Lonnie Smith returned to Blue Note with the release of "Evolution," bringing the B3 master home to the label where he had first made a name for himself in the late-1960s. "Evolution" featured a dynamic cast of musicians including saxophonists Joe Lovano & John Ellis, trumpeters Keyon Harrold & Maurice Brown, pianist Robert Glasper, guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg, and drummers Johnathan Blake & Joe Dyson.
