Hold up. Hit the brakes. ✋🏻

We all say we know what the North Carolina flag looks like, red, white, and blue, a star, some letters, sure, but have you ever really seen it?

Look closer. Pay attention to the dates.

That one at the top? May 20, 1775. That was 250 years ago today.

Why does that matter? Because on May 20, 1775, a group of folks in Mecklenburg County allegedly got real tired of King George’s nonsense and signed what’s known as the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence — nearly a full year before Jefferson’s version hit print.

Now, historians will argue all day about whether it actually happened. Some say it's legend, some say it's lore. But in Charlotte, they celebrate it every May like it's gospel.

A bold claim. A bold state. And whether you believe the ink ever hit that paper or not, one thing’s for sure:

North Carolina was never the quiet kid in the back of the class.

We’d already separated ourselves from the likes of those beneath us, South Carolina back in 1712, that’s 63 years before this.

Independence is kind of our thing. 🇺🇸
