For Filipino History Month 2024, SFGOV TV proudly celebrates West Bay Pilipino, the oldest Filipino American nonprofit in San Francisco. For over 56 years, West Bay Pilipino has been a vital resource in the South of Market District, offering essential services to both youth and elders in the SOMA community.

Thanks to the support of the City of San Francisco, West Bay was able to acquire a permanent building last year (2023), ensuring the continuation of their invaluable services for the community.

The 81st commemoration of the Bataan Death March was held at the San Francisco national cemetery.
Friends and family of Filipino and American soldiers were joined by numerous city officials and military personnel who remember the brave sacrifices that were made during World War II.
The Bataan Death March was the 65-some miles that American and Filipino soldiers were forced to walk by the Japanese army to a prisoner camp during World War II. Many would not make it to the destination.
Cecilia Gaerlan of the Bataan Legacy Historical Society and daughter of a Bataan Death March survivor organizes this annual celebration and says the lessons learned from the past are still important today.

Legendary American labor leader and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta gives a passionate speech about the legacy of Filipinos in California during the inauguration ceremony of Rob Bonta, the first Filipino American elected to serve as Attorney General of California.
She, along with labor leaders Cesar Chavez and Fil-Ams Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz, organized the farming boycotts and strikes in California in the 1960s. Their actions, along with other Mexican and Filipino American farmers and their families, created the labor union United Farm Workers (UFW) and revolutionized labor practices in the nation. Bonta's parents were part of the UFW and they lived in a trailer in La Paz, home of the UFW headquarters.
Bonta was appointed as attorney general in 2020 by Governor Gavin Newsom. In the November 2022 elections, Bonta defeated his Republican opponent by nearly 2 million votes.

More than 250,000 Filipinos answered the call to fight under the US flag during World War II.

It wasn’t until October 2017 were they bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor awarded in the United States.

This video was taken in November 2017 during an awarding ceremony in San Francisco.

Thank you to The Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project and the Bayanihan Equity Center.

And thank you to our Filipino World War II veterans and all those who served.

Happy Veterans Day 2022
