Yesterday, a friend sent me a post about Dominique Savioz, whose music has just been reissued on a compilation. His 1985 solo album has become quite a sought-after Swiss record.

I actually met Dominique back in November 2017, while working on our compilation “A Look Into The Evasion Disques Vaults 1970–1973” released in 2018 (see cover on the last slide).

We were particularly interested in his song “Rendez-Vous Manqué”, and I went to meet him in Martigny (Bar Le Terminus 🚂) where I took this first picture of him holding his album. We had a great chat about the album, music and his story. A very nice man. I still remember him telling me that at the time, for him coming from le Valais, going to Lausanne felt a bit like going to New York. 😂 And that day, he kindly gave me the original reel-to-reel tapes of his album, including the instrumental versions he used for playback on stage. Yes, the 80’s :)

In the end, “Rendez-Vous Manqué” didn’t quite fit our compilation, so we never used it. The tapes have been sitting in our archive ever since.

Check the song here and let us know if we should do a 45: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLiHQOup7a4

One of the greatest rewards of working on archival releases is connecting with the families behind the music. Here is Jesus Caunedo’s daughter, Susana, holding our reissue of Fire & Sugar.

Susana has been incredibly kind and generous, sharing family photographs and memories of her father. One of our favorites is this funny story from the recording of Fire & Sugar:

“I kept telling my dad, ‘Oye papi, eso suena raro!’ (‘Hey Dad, this sounds strange!’) and my neighbor joked, ‘That’s music to get high to!’ My dad laughed and said, ‘She doesn’t even know what “high” means!’ I remember replying, ‘Es peor que borracho!’ (‘It’s worse than being drunk!’) 😂”

The kind of stories that never make onto record sleeves. 😅

Who was Jesús Caunedo? 🔎

Although he played on countless Latin recordings throughout his career, his name never became a household one. Few people know he even played on the original 1963 version of 'Oye Como Va' by Tito Puente.

Born in Havana in 1934 and later moving through New York before settling in Puerto Rico, Caunedo remained one of Latin music’s hidden figures until his passing in San Juan in 2006.

“Fire & Sugar” captures one of the rare moments where his own musical vision took center stage. This reissue includes a printed booklet with Pablo Yglesias exploring his remarkable story. Available on our web store: https://rocafortrecords.bandcamp.com/album/fire-sugar

You’re listening to ‘Guaguanrock’ by Jesús Caunedo.

The song blends Afro-Cuban guaguancó rhythms with rock and jazz-funk but deeply rooted in Cuban tradition and Nuyorican salsa.

A perfect snapshot of Caunedo’s up-tempo, genre-crossing approach from his 1975 LP “Fire & Sugar” we’ve just reissued.

Out now on Bandcamp and distributed worldwide by Kudos Records.

Reissuing an original record is a long process and artwork restoration is often overlooked.
Original files are rarely available, so everything starts from a worn sleeve.
Iñigo Moxo and Ivan Ivánovich did a fantastic job on this one. The Caunedo logo you see on the front cover and inside the gatefold, for example, was entirely redrawn by hand.

Afro-Cuban rhythms meet jazz-funk.

Recorded in Puerto Rico in 1975, Cuban musician Jesús Caunedo, who played with the greats like Celia Cruz and Tito Puente, delivers his most personal statement.

Transferred and remastered directly from the original master tapes, this official gatefold reissue LP includes a previously unreleased track and a printed booklet with liner notes.
