The Queen is dead, long live the King!

Everybody loves a monarchy. And QEII embodied what is noble about the one who wears the crown.

Her biggest achievement? Probably lasting seven decades in the hot seat without incident (even though those around her made up for that in spades).

That is no easy task for someone thrust into the position at a tender age of 25. For her sure longevity, there will never be another king or queen like her.

Why are we enthralled and spellbound by the existence of a king or queen? The very designation holds a majestic tone that few can only imagine.

Leader of the land. Saviour of the downtrodden. Perhaps even a step closer to the divine than us mere peasants.

Of course, in the English speaking world, the media paints a glorious, fearless, and righteous identity of the crown.

King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table. King Richard the Lionhearted. And now Queen Elisabeth 2 and how she overcame her travails so poignantly depicted in Netflix’s The Crown.

Even the heroes of fantastical lands in epics like Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones reflect a Anglo Saxon medieval quality. And the language spoken in all of these culturally iconic blockbusters? Unabashedly English to the hilt. There can be no other.

We are tired of politicians who rule the world today. Is there one who we feel is worthy of the crucial role they play, and, egad, the power they wield?

The very way PMs and Presidents come to where they are is made for travesties in the process. Elections can be gerrymandered. Popular votes manufactured when you give people what they want, at least until you get what YOU want.

But a King or Queen has to be born that way. There is something irrevocable about birthright. And when fate is met with a unique individual up to her task, it is something that comes along only once in a lifetime.

That’s why this Queen still had the world - well, her Commonwealth at least - hanging on her every word, and cheering her on through thick and thin. And believe me, many of her family made sure of the thin.

All this talk of whether her son will be able to carry on in her footsteps is misguided. He looks to be a worthy successor and will likely be a decent King.

But there will always be only one Elisabeth the second.

There were no bogeys and lots of birdies so the Holywood man will be looking forward to tomorrow with a lot of confidence.

Rory McIlroy put in a much improved performance today with a five under par 67 for his second round at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at Mount Juliet.

After tapping in for a 64, Rahm was told the bad news greenside. He had tested positive for COVID. The leader in the clubhouse was no longer even welcome in the clubhouse. Brutal.

It couldn’t have been going better for Jon Rahm on Saturday at the Memorial Tournament. The 26-year-old had to wake up earlier than he liked to finish his second round, but he made a hole-in-one in the morning and later went on a back-nine birdie binge in the afternoon to seize a six-shot 54-hole ...
