📉 Thai Rice Prices Hit 9-Year Low on Weak Demand

Thai rice export prices dropped to a 9-year low at $350/ton this week, down from $360, as ample supply and sluggish demand weighed on the market.

🌾 Basmati Rice Dispute Clouds India–EU FTA Talks

The long-negotiated India–EU free trade agreement has hit a major hurdle: basmati rice. Both India and Pakistan claim GI rights over the premium grain, with Brussels caught in the middle.

🔹 India filed for exclusive GI in 2018; Pakistan submitted a rival claim in 2023 (including parts of Kashmir).
🔹 EU hesitation risks delaying or derailing the FTA, which could boost Indian exports across textiles, pharma & agri-products.
🔹 For both nations, Europe is a key basmati market — worth billions with premium pricing.

Analysts warn the deal could collapse if the rice dispute isn’t resolved, with geopolitical and trade implications beyond agriculture.
