Pack B***o Racing is one of Colorado’s most unique and deeply rooted traditions. What began during the mining era, when prospectors would race their b***os, loaded with gear, over rugged mountain passes, has grown into a fun and challenging endurance sport that continues to thrive today.
Pack b***o racing was officially named Colorado’s Summer Heritage Sport in 2012, a testament to its cultural and historical significance. Races are held throughout the summer in historic mining towns like Leadville, Fairplay, Buena Vista, and Georgetown. Often covering distances of 10 to 30 miles across steep, technical terrain. Runners must stay connected to their b***os the entire way, working as a team to navigate the course… and yes, the b***o sets the pace! 😅
If you're curious about getting involved or just want to learn more, is an incredible place to start. Based just south of the metro area, they’re dedicated to training and rehoming rescue donkeys, offering clinics, hosting training runs, and mentoring new racers. Their work is a huge part of keeping the heart of pack b***o racing alive and preserving its legacy while helping more people and donkeys connect through this incredible sport.
