oneBURGH member Katie is a Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ fan, but her visit to Highmark Stadium in Station Square this month left her wondering why “a climate controlled space that doesnt smell like urinal cakes” isn’t available to her and other nursing moms that love soccer.
Good question, Katie. Federal law says nursing moms can feed their child in all legal public places.
Do the Riverhounds HAVE to provide you a space? Legally, they do. Anywhere you want. A “legal” public place means that Katie cannot enter a suite at Highmark without a ticket(not a bad idea though) but can nurse in the stands or over a urinal.
What about privacy?
The Federal PUMP Act mandates that most employers provide a private, non-bathroom space for employees to pump. This doesn’t help Katie either, but it does create a floor that a stinky bathroom doesn’t cut it for hygiene and respect.
There are private areas (not bathrooms) at PNC Park, Acrisure, PPG Paints, the Zoo, and the airport. A good goal (🥅 see what we did) would be to keep up with them.

Highmark Stadium responded to Katie’s social media post by saying that “…this isn’t ideal…looking for ways to improve.”
May we suggest a small piece of the $75 million expansion for more stands, rooftop bars, and scoreboards be used to add a cozy 8x8 room?
