🇺🇸 VETERAN OF THE WEEK | CONGRESSMAN DON BACON

The Platform Magazine Foundation is proud to recognize Congressman Don Bacon, Brigadier General, U.S. Air Force (Retired), as our Veteran of the Week.

Before serving in Congress, Congressman Bacon dedicated nearly three decades to the United States Air Force, building a career grounded in leadership, service, mentorship, readiness, and commitment to country.

In our exclusive interview, Congressman Bacon reflected on his journey from growing up on an Illinois farm to becoming an Air Force general officer, the mentors who helped shape his career, the importance of physical readiness, his connection to Offutt Air Force Base and Nebraska, and the military leadership principles he carried with him into public service.

We also discussed America 250 and why understanding our nation’s history matters. His message is one worth sharing with the next generation: learn our history, understand what previous generations endured, appreciate the freedoms we inherited, and recognize our responsibility to preserve them.

🧬 What if identifying a biological threat could begin with something as simple as a visible color change? Battelle scientists are advancing a novel spray-based technology designed to detect targeted biological agents on surfaces. Originally developed in response to a U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency need, the proprietary formulation binds to specific biological threats and produces a visual signal that can be interpreted without complex equipment.

Unlike systems that indicate only that contamination may be present, Battelle’s approach can be customized to identify a specific biological agent or multiple threats simultaneously.

Developed initially for military applications, this field-deployable technology may also hold promise for hospital infection control and food safety monitoring.

🇺🇸 NEW: America 250 “Walking Through History”
The Man Behind the Signature: William Paca, Maryland
We know the Declaration of Independence.
But how much do we know about the people behind the signatures?
This stop in our America 250 “Walking Through History” journey takes us to Annapolis, Maryland, and inside the home of William Paca, one of Maryland’s four signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Before signing his name to one of the most important documents in American history, Paca was a Maryland lawyer who challenged British policies, joined the growing resistance to British rule, served in the Continental Congress, and ultimately voted for independence, approved the Declaration, and signed the parchment.
Dr. Judy Staveley visits the historic William Paca House to explore more than politics. Step inside Paca’s world through fascinating objects, classical influences, early science and medicine, and even Maryland’s heated 1772 debate over smallpox inoculation.
There is also another side of the story that must be remembered: the contradiction between the Founders’ extraordinary language of liberty and the reality that Paca himself enslaved people.
History is rarely simple. That is exactly why we keep walking through it.
