Headed into the weekend like?!?! Please be safe out there everyone! I know it’s gonna be a beautiful out and we’re all cooped up & stir-crazy & losing our minds but let’s remember why we’ve stayed home all this time. Let’s remember that more than 65,000 Americans have lost their battle to this virus. Every single one who had a family, and loved ones, and dreams for the future. And since it’s almost 7pm, please remember the men & women working tirelessly on the front lines to keep us the rest of us safe.

Are you guys tired of cooking? I know that’s a weird question, especially coming from me, but for the past couple of days I seem to have lost my cooking mojo. Lunch today was a full-on fridge clean out: leftover strip steak and roasted carrots, handful of baby potatoes with anchovy dressing, a few olives and a coupla cocktail tomatoes. It was delicious with toasted slices of ’s crusty sourdough but not exactly inspired. Where are you finding your cooking inspo these days? Looking for a reboot! 🍷🍷

Is this video blanketing your feed? Good. If you haven’t watched it yet, please take a moment to do so. And please remember the lives and livelihoods turned upside-down by this crisis. Local restaurants are the heart and soul of our communities. They’re family. They’re generosity. They’re millions of jobs and a $1 trillion economy. I can’t wait to get back to restaurants…ALL THE RESTAURANTS! We need them to reopen and they desperately need Congress’ help to do it. Please share the message & have your voice heard on behalf of your favorite local joint! I hope I’ll see you there very soon.

Everything’s better with tahdig! The ultimate cozy-comfort dinner when I was growing up (besides rice, of course) was “macaroni” with tahdig: pasta cooked with meat sauce and Persian spices. But what my siblings and I fought over was the saucy, caramelized, crunchy crust. Hadn’t made it in years and it’s still really yummy!

Spending part of this surreal birthday looking back at favorite travel memories, which—unsurprisingly—are mostly photos of me beaming at across a deliriously overfilled table like this one. (Yes, I always order two softshells at Nunan’s, birthdays or otherwise.) I miss restaurants. I miss all of you. I miss Maine. And Italy. And Vietnam. And Jamaica. And Japan. And all of our happy places around the world. Today the birthday wishes from far-flung friends have reminded me that we’re all in this together, that none of us are alone, even in isolation, and that one day soon we’ll gather again around some joyful table. Last night the ever-thoughtful delivered a taste of Maine to our home in Brooklyn. Grateful for the socially distant lobster feast, and the reminder that happier days will soon return. With a side of tarragon butter, please.

Social distancing, Top Chef style: that time I got to cook for me just by describing a dish over the phone. Who’d have thought this would become the new normal? Watch the whole episode on when you’re done baking all that bread!

More than 10 million American restaurant workers could lose their jobs in the coming weeks — and the ripple effect will be felt across the food chain, devastating local economies. This is not a restaurant problem; this is an American problem. “Whether your server wears a flannel shirt or a fancy suit, your favorite restaurant is primarily in the business of giving a whole lot of people a paycheck.” But without our help, 75% of independent restaurants are likely to never reopen. Trying to find some pleasure in the small things: strong Persian tea (my father’s blend) and my first attempt at shirini keshmishi, the traditional raisin cookies I loved as a kid in Iran. Iranians are big on symbolism, especially at the New Year. Cookies and cakes are meant to foretell happiness to come, while saffron is said to lift the spirits. Naturally, I threw in 3x the saffron. Hoping you can find some sweetness and joy today. @ Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn

Norooz & the New Normal...Woke up early and stepped out to find the corner flower vendor quietly setting up for the day, almost as usual. Got these beautiful quince blossoms and hyacinth for our ceremonial haft sin, to celebrate Persian New Year aka the first day of spring. But of course nothing is as usual—note the gloves, and the empty sidewalk. Our neighbors are stuck in France so we’re babysitting their goldfish (one of the symbols of Norooz, coincidentally). Obviously not running errands so am substituting apple butter for velvety samanu pudding in this year’s ceremonial spread. Tonight we’ll make crunchy herbed rice and striped bass and there will be too much food for the two of us and we’ll raise a glass to our too-distant family and friends and to all of you, on this first strange surreal day of spring. Most of all we’ll think of those suffering in Iran—and around the world—while wishing for renewal, rebirth, and better, happier times ahead. Norooz Mobarak, friends. May this find you healthy and safe. #1399 @ Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn

Remember your favorite restaurants?
Remember that server who cheerfully re-recited the specials when your 6-top was too busy catching up to pay attention?
The somm who understood when you pointed to “something in this range,” then brought you a spectacular bottle for $10 less?
The chef who whipped up off-menu buttered noods for your fussy toddler?
The bartender who listened to stories about your “week from hell,” then poured you a sip of something special from the upper shelves?
The kitchen crews whose names you might never know, but whose food sustained you through good times and bad?
The restaurant dishes you remember as vividly as your own mother’s cooking—and maybe crave even more?
Let’s not forget them now.
Restaurant workers are suffering more than most right now—and getting little to no government help to stay solvent and stay afloat. This isn’t just about your favorite burger joint going under. The effect will ripple across our communities and economy. Workers in the food industry don’t only feed us; we also put food on their plates. Without our support, they simply won’t survive.
Please, please spare a few minutes today to help. Ask your representatives to provide a lifeline to the restaurant industry, by calling the capitol switchboard at ‪202-224-3121‬ and asking to be connected to your senators and congresspeople. This crisis is here NOW, and will be felt for years to come if we don’t address it ASAP.

Still reeling from that beautiful, emotional night at the with Coco & Naomi. Such grace, such class, such passion from both these two. Not a dry eye in all of Arthur Ashe last night. This is what the world would be like if it were run by strong, kind, good-hearted women. So excited to watch and for the rest of their brilliant careers. 🙏 and for the unforgettable evening. @ Arthur Ashe Stadium

Nihi Sumba is a small resort with a big ❤️. The founders set up the nonprofit to bring health care, clean water, education, and sustainable employment to the Sumbanese, who are often desperately poor—and many guests spend at least a few days volunteering at clinics and schools and visiting local villages. My time with the children of Sumba was some of the most meaningful of my trip. ❤ @ Nihi Sumba Island

That ☀️ Where will you be spending your weekend? I'll be in chilly thinking back to dreamy . For our epic Spa Safari, we trekked through rice paddies and jungle at sunrise, only to land at this beautiful promontory where we were served icy-cold coconut water, fire-grilled toast, fresh tropical fruit, and strong Indonesian coffee. After a swimming with hawksbill turtles off an empty beach, it was time for the longest, deepest massages on the planet. Fully acknowledge that this breathtaking setting -- where the rice fields meet the ocean -- deserves better than my video skills 😉

Spring on a plate! Is there anything better than housemade ricotta topped with baby favas, fresh mint and grassy olive oil? Yes...that combo generously slathered on .newyork’s shatteringly crisp carta di musica crackers paired with an even crisper quartino of white. So happy to have you in town , and so lovely to run into , too. ❤️ny
