It is with a great deal of excitement that Newberg Neighbors announces we will be moving forward with a new vision and (relatively) new name: “Newberg Neighbors for a Better Community”. Our mission:

We are a collective of local writers dedicated to fostering unity and compassion in our community. Through thoughtful storytelling, clear communication, and careful analysis, we shine a light on the events, challenges, and needs that shape our shared lives. By sharing our perspectives and amplifying local voices, we aim to inspire connection, encourage action, and build a stronger, more caring community—together.

Be looking for more information about us and ways we can support our community together!

For now, Happy 4th of July! Whether you are celebrating, mourning, protesting, or all three, we know that you are doing so for the love of this place we all call home!

The Far-Reaching Impact of Fear in the Workplace

When fear prevents people from showing up to work, the repercussions ripple throughout our entire economy. This is especially true for the agriculture and wine industries, where a stable workforce is crucial. The effects of ICE raids extend far beyond federal policy; they have a tangible, immediate impact on our neighbors, local businesses, and vital industries.

The trickle-down effect of what is happening with the federal government has hit food banks ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

In my weekly order form, I received this message from YCAP staff, who, by the way, are working hard to get food banks as much food as they can: For the past few years, our food inventory has been shrinking. The forecast did not look good.

Now this news.

Please take a moment to read this message to all food banks.

Attached is the YCAP order form for March 20 to March 27. You can find the number of cases of food available in the far right column of the order form.

Most of these read 40 cases or below available. We have 40 partner agencies to divide these with. If you’re ordering 6 or 10 cases of each, that just can’t work mathematically. We’ll do what we can for you with the inventory we have.

Many items have to be ‘allocated’ to you with our warehouse supply, especially USDA foods so low. You will get products on your order that you weren’t expecting, but I think you’ll like everything that is sent. Food Bank inventory will likely remain at its current low levels.

A CCC Federal Grant to the Oregon Food Bank was CANCELED, along with many other programs and staff being cut at the Federal Government level. Below is an inventory message from the Oregon Food Bank.

This affects every state food bank and many school programs: Fresh Fluid USDA milk deliveries scheduled for May, June, and July are canceled. Two truckloads of Cheese have also been CANCELED, one from May and one from June.

Frozen Meat was affected by Federal cuts; a total of 13 expected 40,000 lb-truckloads of frozen pork, chicken, and turkey products were CANCELED.

We expect some of these to be replaced by Section 32 Bonus frozen meat items, but we don’t have control over what and when that product is offered.

We will have little to no USDA Produce available. This produce season also impacts access to donated produce, so expect lots of local, PNW crops: Apples, Pears, Onions, Potatoes, and Vegetables!

A damning 56-page investigation report was obtained by Newberg Neighbors and reveals that former Newberg School District Superintendent Dr. Steve Phillips failed to monitor the budget, resulting in an $8 million deficit. He also used racist language and misrepresented the district’s compliance with state standards. The report, prepared by independent investigator Dave Novotney, Ph.D., substantiates four of seven allegations against Phillips during his tenure leading a district beset by years of controversy.
