Jan Hus (1372–1415) was a Czech priest, reformer, and martyr who became an early forerunner of the Protestant Reformation. Influenced by the writings of John Wycliffe, he preached boldly against corruption in the medieval church, calling for a return to biblical authority and moral purity among clergy. His refusal to recant his teachings at the Council of Constance led to his condemnation as a heretic. On July 6, 1415, Hus was burned at the stake, steadfast in his convictions to the end. His martyrdom shook Europe and sowed seeds that would later blossom in the Reformation led by figures like Martin Luther.

As he faced ex*****on, Hus reportedly declared, “You are going to burn a goose, but a hundred years from now, you will have a swan which you can neither roast nor boil.” In Czech, “Hus” means “goose,” making his words a prophetic play on his own name. Many later saw this as a foreshadowing of Martin Luther, often symbolized as the “swan” of the Reformation, who rose to challenge Rome a century later. The statement remains significant as both a testimony of courage in the face of death and a reminder that truth cannot be extinguished by fire, it endures and grows, even when its messengers are silenced.

A prolific author, pastor, and Bible teacher, Kenyon emphasized the reality of the new creation, the power of confession, and the believer’s union with Christ. His writings, including The Two Kinds of Faith, In His Presence, and Jesus the Healer, have influenced generations of faith-based ministries, especially within the Word of Faith movement.
