Samuel Morris, originally known as Prince Kaboo, was born into a royal family in Liberia during the late 1800s. During a tribal war, he was captured by enemy warriors and brutally tortured in an attempt to force his father to surrender his kingdom. Bound with ropes and left outside under heavy guard, Kaboo cried out to the God he had heard about through Christian missionaries. Suddenly, a brilliant supernatural light flashed around him, he heard a voice say, "Run!" His ropes fell away, his captors fled in terror, and he escaped into the jungle. Convinced that the God of the Christians had miraculously delivered him, Kaboo set out to find the One who had saved him.

As he journeyed toward the coast, Kaboo testified that the Holy Spirit guided him from village to village until he reached Christian missionaries. There he heard the story of Saul's conversion and immediately recognized the same heavenly light that had rescued him. He gave his life to Christ, was baptized, and received the name Samuel Morris. His greatest desire became to know more about the Holy Spirit. When the missionaries told him of Methodist pastor Stephen Merritt in New York, Samuel determined to travel to America to learn more. During the voyage, his simple faith and constant prayers profoundly affected the crew, and several sailors came to faith in Christ through his testimony.

When Samuel arrived in New York, he sought out Stephen Merritt and told him, "I have come from Africa to learn about the Holy Ghost." Merritt left him for the evening at a rescue mission, but when he returned, he found seventeen men kneeling in prayer around Samuel after hearing him speak of Jesus. Many believed Samuel ended up teaching Stephen Merritt more about the Holy Spirit than Merritt ever taught him. Samuel later enrolled at Taylor University, where his humility, prayer life, and unwavering faith sparked a spiritual awakening. Students and professors were deeply moved by his life, many surrendered to missionary service, and his influence helped strengthen both the spiritual life and future missionary vision of the university.

Samuel Morris died in 1893 at only about twenty years of age, yet his influence continues to this day. His remarkable story of miraculous deliverance, childlike faith, and complete dependence on the Holy Spirit has inspired generations of believers to pursue a deeper walk with Christ and to carry the Gospel to the nations. His life proves that God can use someone with little education but complete faith to impact the world.

John Osteen was a Baptist pastor before he was baptized in the Holy Spirit. After receiving the baptism, he began speaking in other tongues just as the believers did in Acts 2:4, where "they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." Scripture describes speaking in tongues as a Spirit-inspired prayer language that edifies the believer (1 Corinthians 14:2, 4), while the public gift of tongues, accompanied by interpretation, edifies the entire church (1 Corinthians 12:10; 14:27-28). These are biblical manifestations of the Holy Spirit found throughout the New Testament.

While traveling in the Philippines, John Osteen sensed the Holy Spirit prompting him to speak with a particular man on an airplane. As they talked, he discovered the man was a Catholic priest and a professor at a seminary. Their conversation turned to the Charismatic Renewal and the subject of speaking in other tongues. Osteen then spoke a few words in his prayer language.

The priest immediately responded with excitement, saying, "I understand that language. I know several languages, and the one you're speaking is Arabic. You're giving praise to God!" He was thrilled and exclaimed, "That's the gift of tongues mentioned in the Bible!" As a teacher in a Catholic seminary in the Philippines, he was so impacted by the encounter that he urged John Osteen to come and speak to the students about the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Scripture teaches that not every believer will operate in the public gift of tongues with interpretation before the congregation (1 Corinthians 12:30), but every believer may receive the Holy Spirit and pray in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4; Acts 10:44-46; Acts 19:6). These various manifestations of speaking in other tongues are presented in the New Testament as valid works of the Holy Spirit, drawing believers into deeper communion with God while also providing gifts that strengthen and edify the Church.

Many believers are surprised to discover what Paul actually wrote in 1 Corinthians 14:22-27. He declares that tongues are "for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not." Rather than dismissing the gift, we should let Scripture shape our theology. Paul presents tongues as one of the supernatural ways God bears witness to those who have not yet believed.

In the same passage, Paul explains how the gifts should function when the church gathers. He speaks of tongues, interpretation, prophecy, revelation, and teaching, emphasizing that each has a God-given purpose in the body of Christ. The answer is not to reject the gifts, but to understand them biblically and allow the Holy Spirit to work through them as the New Testament describes.

If you have never spoken in tongues, don't let fear or tradition keep you from everything God has for you. Hunger for the fullness of the Holy Spirit, ask in faith, and receive every good gift your heavenly Father desires to give.

Jesus said, "How much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?" (Luke 11:13). The Father is not reluctant to fill His children with His Spirit. He delights to do so. As we seek Him in faith and surrender, He empowers us to live holy lives, bear witness for Christ, and walk in His presence each day.

Some people quote 1 Corinthians 13:1 and claim that if you have love, you do not need to speak in tongues. But that is not what Paul is saying. He does not tell believers to stop speaking in tongues. He says that if you speak in tongues but lack love, you become like sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. Love is not the alternative to praying in tongues. Scripture calls us to walk in love while embracing everything the Holy Spirit has provided. In fact, the very apostle who wrote the "love chapter" also declared, "I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all" (1 Corinthians 14:18). Paul embraced both love and tongues, and the Church should too.

Too often, people search the Scriptures, not to discover what God has provided, but to find a verse they believe excuses them from receiving it. Rather than allowing the whole counsel of God to shape their doctrine, they isolate a passage and use it to explain away the supernatural. Yet Jesus promised the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5), the disciples were all filled with the Holy Ghost and "began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance" (Acts 2:4), and Paul encouraged believers to "be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18). Do not let tradition rob you of God's promises. If you have not yet received the baptism in the Holy Ghost and begun to speak with tongues as the Spirit gives utterance, seek the Lord with an open heart. He is still pouring out His Spirit today, and "how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?" (Luke 11:13).

William J. Seymour wrote, "We must believe, with great joy, that God is able to heal." Scripture points us to a God who is both willing and able. Jesus healed the sick throughout the Gospels, and James 5:14-15 encourages believers to pray in faith. Our confidence is not based on feelings or circumstances. It is based on the unchanging promises of God's Word.
