"All I want to say is that, they don't really care about us!"
(This is one of the best TED talks that I've ever watched. Given by an highly accomplished Nigerian Journalist, Aunty Funmi Iyanda!)
I encourage everyone to watch it...
You see, when we look at what is happening around us with a global lens, it is so easy to point fingers and blame the rising "terrorists"- the young people following the trajectory and joining Isis or boko-haram; we want to curse at them and blame them because they are committing these atrocities against their fellow humans; watch this TED talk really attentively and hear what this journalist is really saying:
"the effect of what the very corrupt governments have done, the dire situation and in-humane living conditions (slums) that these young boys and girls have been conditioned to live in as if though it were normal; the women, their children and families that live in severe poverty.... Sing that Micheal Jackson song that says
"ALL I WANT TO SAY IS THAT, THEY DON'T REALLY CARE ABOUT US!" -
Folks, what you see today happening is the revolt and the voices that were never heard, the ones that have never been given a chance ever, to tell their stories!!!!
The result is the frustration we witness today! OUR VOICELESS YOUTH ARE VOICING THEIR FRUSTRATIONS BY JOINING ISIS, BOKO-HARAM AND THE MANY OTHERS! THEY HAVE NO SCHOOLS TO OCCUPY THEM TO FOSTER PEACEFUL DIVIDEND SO THEY FOLLOW THE ALTERNATIVE, WHICH IS TO GO TO WAR, COMMIT CRIMES AND YOU CAN NAME THE REST!
While of course there are many exceptions to this truth who decide that their stories will be told very differently; this remains part of the aching truth for many youth who unfortunately can't re-imagine that their lives could be any better or that any one cares, So they choose...
