It is with sadness that we note the passing of our friend, author Tony Vavlas. In 2015, 1701 Press had the good fortune to publish Tony's book, You Can't Feed Butter to a Cat.
Tony described the book as a collection of humorous phone calls between his father and him, but the book was no mere collection of transcribed phone calls.
Tony may have started by writing down phone conversations he had with his dad, but what he presented to 1701 Press was carefully crafted. He captured all these nuances in the way people from Campbell/Youngstown talk to each other, the way fathers and sons sometimes talk to each other. There was a real Oscar and Felix quality to their relationship. It was funny and it had a lot of heart and humanity, undeniably. Tony even created a bunch of amusing gestural typographic flourishes to indicate certain actions that were taking place, and I refined and used some of them in the book, which, yes, I was honored to publish.
The book is called You Can't Feed Butter to a Cat because in one conversation Tony's dad calls him and asks how much butter is safe to feed his cat.
Tony was a good writer, and an adept humorist, and gone too soon.
