Tonight!

When Pentagon journalists walked out over new coverage restrictions, several University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism alumni took a stand. Their message: press freedom matters, and the public’s right to know comes first.

Join SPJ and the UMD Journalism Alumni Network at 7 p.m. EST Dec. 1 for a free virtual conversation on journalistic courage and government transparency. Moderated by Lucy Dalglish, join Jamie McIntyre, Idrees Ali, Dan Lamothe and Olivia Logan as they tell firsthand stories of holding the Defense Department accountable and defending a free press.

Journalists don’t sign up to be quiet. They sign up to seek truth — even when the truth makes the powerful uncomfortable.

This week, two women reporters were publicly insulted for doing exactly that.
Instead of backing down, SPJ is standing up — and inviting every journalist and ally to stand with us.

🐷💰 For a limited time, take $15 off SPJ Pro Membership with code: PIGGY.
Because we’re reclaiming the insult meant to silence a reporter and turning it into momentum, solidarity and a stronger journalism community.

If you believe in press freedom…
If you believe in the First Amendment…
If you believe in the work journalists do every single day…

In Quill, Rod Hicks, executive editor of The St. Louis American and former SPJ director of ethics and diversity, warns that U.S. newsrooms are retreating from decades of diversity gains. His article, “Defending DEI,” traces the issue back to the 1968 Kerner Commission’s call for more Black journalists and equitable coverage of Black communities. President Donald Trump’s 2025 executive order eliminating federal DEI programs has prompted media companies to roll back inclusion efforts, threatening accurate representation and weakening journalism’s public service mission, Hicks writes.
