What do you think of the recent news that Quality Marine was recognized as American Humane Certified?

American Humane Society announces that Quality Marine (including freshwater company Aquatropic and aquaculture facility QM Labs) earned the American Humane Certified™ distinction for high standards of care and treatment of animals.

This is a reminder to all our friends out there that the internet is full of scammers. Within minutes of yesterday's announcement, "someone" commented that they had four tickets to sell. We saw and hid the comment while attempting to verify its authenticity with organizers.

As suspected, it was totally and clearly an attempt to people. In addition to no one having tickets that quickly other than prior attendees, a quick visit to "Nancy's" profile revealed it to be a page created just back in August of this year, not even a personal account, with no mutual connections or associations with the aquarium hobby whatsoever. Those were some of the instant tip-offs.

Obviously, the likely page has been blocked and reported to Facebook, but it pays to be vigilant. Don't be duped, which sadly happens too frequently on social media!

In the end, NO ONE is giving up their tickets that easily...let alone four of them! More details on Reef Retreat can be found at https://www.coralmagazine.com/2025/10/01/reef-retreat-2026-tickets-on-sale-now/

Our thoughts are with Lou's friends and family. We will all miss him deeply.

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lou Ekus CEO of Tropic Marin USA, who passed away on September 27, 2025.

Lou led Tropic Marin USA with vision, integrity, and unwavering dedication for 28 years. Under Lous leadership, the company grew to be a household name within this industry. Lou was not only a leader but also a mentor, a friend, and a passionate advocate for marine life and sustainability. Lous knowledge and passion for this hobby was well known as he was always eager to share his knowledge to help industry experts and hobbyists alike.

Those who knew Lou will remember his warmth, curiosity, tireless commitment to excellence and the ability to explain aquarium chemistry in the simplest way possible so everyone could understand.

Even with his strength and for waning, he was still able to set the course for the future of Tropic Marin USA and transfer responsibility to younger shoulders. Lou hand-picked Brian and spent countless hours working together to ensure Tropic Marin USA would be cared for in the same way with love and respect for the industry and the brand.

Lou leaves behind a remarkable legacy, and we are committed to honoring that by continuing the mission and values he instilled in the organization.

We ask for your thoughts and prayers for his family, friends, and all who were touched by his life and work. Details about memorial services and how you can pay your respects will be shared in the coming days.

With deepest sympathy,

From Eckart, Thomas, Marcus and the whole Tropic Marin Team

It's another species first. It's a species that "glows". It's a fluorescent anthias that historically sells for more than a used car. And it's an aquarium breeding first out of Surge Marine Life's hatchery in Florida. What is it?

Kevin Barden's Surge Marine Life broke its silence, unveiling the latest captive-bred marine fish first. Barden's company succeeded in producing the world's first aquarium-bred Odontanthias katayamai, or Rose Anthias, in their Florida-based closed-system aquaculture facility.
