Adjunct Press As the name implies, Adjunct Press seeks to publish poetry chapbooks at irregular intervals, and wit

Adjunct Press is an independent chapbook press in Milwaukee. Adjunct Press packages poetry into handmade books, using mostly appropriated materials. Adjunct Press has no job security and works at irregular intervals. Adjunct Press is underfunded and its labor is considered expendable. Adjunct Press is run by a fat cat, literally, the Department Chair Berserker Leo X. Adjunct Press books are hand-made by part-time workers Alice Ladrick and Jonny Lohr.

We’re stoked to be officially releasing A Roof of Birds by Susan Firer! Our most ambitious book ever for a great poetry hero. Get it fast while it’s still available. Link in the comments.

A Roof of Birds is Susan Firer’s final poetry manuscript, written in three sections; “Transubstantiation,” “The Rusk Epiphany,” and “Alfred Hitchcock’s Birthday.” The collection contains the combination of humor, personal history, and consideration of place for which Firer is known; but it also sees the poems expanding into exploration and abstraction as the poet contemplates life and mortality. While this introspection might imply isolation, Firer places it firmly in conversation within a larger poetry community. The collection begins with “A Cento of Stone,” a poem wholly composed of text taken from other poems; and ends with “Ghost Poems, a Révérence,” where Firer gives credit to the poems that influenced her work.

Susan Firer (1948–2025) served as Milwaukee’s Poet Laureate from 2008 to 2010 and taught poetry and creative writing at UW-Milwaukee from 1982 to 2015. Her work has been published in the New Yorker, Ms. magazine, The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, The Book of Irish American Poetry: From the Eighteenth Century to the Present, and many more. Her previous books include the Cleveland State University Poetry Center Award-winning The Lives of Saints and Everything; this book, published posthumously, is her seventh. Susan lived the vast majority of her life within hearing distance of Lake Michigan. Her archives are housed at UW-Milwaukee’s Golda Meir Library.

This book was printed and bound in St. Francis, WI. It is hand-sewn with a French link stitch. The cover was printed with a pen plotter on vintage cover stock that was gifted by Woodland Pattern.n

Eight Memoranda explores the position of the text within an ever-corporatizing world. The poems begin with a merger of body and nature, with the text acting as a communication of this relationship. But soon a separation enters the field. Persons are sorted into class, shifting all things to indicators of this status. After text becomes commodified, non-commercialism becomes a privilege. Text could be obscured so far that it even erases humanity through commerce and isolation; or it could be an impetus to the social through shared knowledge. This social drive returns the poems to nature and demands the reader awaken back to the world.

Michael Begnal is author of the collections Future Blues (Salmon Poetry, 2012) and Ancestor Worship (Salmon Poetry, 2007), the chapbooks Tropospheric Clouds (Adjunct Press, 2020) and The Muddy Banks (Ghost City Press, 2016), and a critical monograph The Music and Noise of the Stooges, 1967-71: Lost in the Future (Routledge, 2022), with a second Stooges book forthcoming from Reaktion Books.

This book was laser printed as an incunable book, referring back to the earliest stage of printed books assembled with the text only on the recto side. It was hand in Saint Francis, WI, in an edition of 50.

We’re officially dropping our next two releases. Milwaukee Liddy Hagiography by Tyler Farrell and Walk a Little Differently Up Hill by James Liddy.

Milwaukee Liddy Hagiography places Tyler Farrell’s poems with letters from poet James Liddy, with photographs of their friendship interspersed. Farrell’s poems create a lyrical zooming out of a map, beginning locally in a Milwaukee corner bar and ever expanding through the scenes and histories of poetry. Juxtaposed with the artefact of Liddy’s correspondence, the poems turn the images to postcards crossing time and place.

Walk a Little Differently Up Hill collects 11 poems and 8 letters of James Liddy, compiled from personal letters sent to Tyler Farrell. This collection shows the connection between Liddy’s poetry and his personal correspondences. The poems’ first distribution is through friends. The accompanied letters carry a poetic nature that removes the border between them and the poems themselves. Get them both at link in comments.

We’re officially releasing Alice Ladrick’s Isotope/Autobitchography dos-a-dos chapbook! Link in comments.

Isotope/Autobitchography were written from 2012-2014 and were never published.

Isotope brings in the self behind the poems. The human body is placed in interaction with scientific, medical, and poetic fields. While each of these is working to dehumanize the body through their objectivity; the self repeatedly breaks through emotionally. The Rosenbergs fight through history, the human body refuses abstraction.

Autobitchography calls out in short bursts, demanding the reader come into their exclusive party. Once inside, the reader finds an almost cliquish fight between the poet and the poems themselves, their context, and their surroundings.

The text pages are laser printed on 20lb paper at The Bindery in Milwaukee. The cover was printed with a robot arm using gold Sharpie markers on an 80lb speckletone coverstock. This book is hand-sewn in a dos-à-dos binding with printed marbled endsheets from Jemma Lewis Marbling in an edition of 40. Another 10 special edition copies were made with striped, robot-arm-drawn endsheets.

Here’s the covers and binding for Peter Burzynski’s chapbook coming out next week. Check out the Woodland Pattern Book Center page for info on his reading on the 16th, or we’ll post about it too and when we have it up for release.

Cover image of the WP windows is by Alice. the text pages are kind of perfect binding glued, and then the cover is side stitched on, which will give the pages proper support. I’ve always loved the mimeo revolution-era books where it’s like a full book but just big ass staples chunked down the side, so we’re trying to nod to that vibe.
