Thunderstorms marching along in a line off to the northwest… nice little light show but so far not on track to affect us here in NWI… note the random strike more than 13 miles from the nearest parent storm 😳

Derecho season… we aren’t in the crosshairs on this one but we’ll keep an eye if some remnants move through in the morning

A strong mcs/derecho will develop this evening into tonight across Minnesota and will move southeast overnight, dissipating across northern Illinois. Like this morning, it's unclear how quickly this will fizzle out, and it's possible it holds some strength and moves through our area around sunrise with a low-end damaging wind threat. As of now, most models show this fizzling out and being no threat only producing showers and weak storms tomorrow morning.

Slow-moving showers with occasional/isolated lightning strikes are expected in the area today. These showers/storms will produce locally torrential rainfall that could lead to localized flooding. We have also received multiple reports of funnel clouds already from these showers/storms, but these funnel clouds are not expected to reach the ground and cause damage.

Storms are steadily moving in this direction. We are about an hour from the main body of storms reaching NWI, though the storms have been expanding in coverage

The NOAA NWS Storm Prediction Center has upgraded the risk of severe storms in our area to a Slight Risk (level 2 of 5). The main hazard will be damaging winds. Beyond that, torrential rains with the storms tonight and continuing to this weekend could present a threat to areas prone to flooding (hopefully the silver lining will be a dent in the rainfall deficit so far this summer). Helpful graphic below outlines the timeframe of the expected storms

We are under a heat advisory through Thursday night. Heat indices will range from 100° to as high as 107° at times. Extremely high dew points in the high 70s to near 80 will make conditions extremely uncomfortable. Please be safe and take precautions if you have to be in these conditions for any length of time.

An isolated storm is not out of the question today; tomorrow and the rest of the weekend will bring increased storm chances. With the heat and humidity, any storms that do form will have plenty of energy to work with, and excessive rainfall with an attendant flood threat will also be possible.

We can expect widespread showers and storms this afternoon, however, the severe threat seems lower. The stratus clouds overhead are limiting diurnal destabilization; we’ll watch if enough daytime heating can occur for the storms to organize / intensify as they approach

Not overly excited about severe chances tomorrow. Latest thinking from the NWS below

There is a severe weather threat in the region on Saturday, although forecast confidence remains low. The most likely scenario is for gradually weakening storms with a strong and gusty wind threat in the morning, followed by isolated to widely scattered strong to severe storms in the afternoon and evening. Changes to the forecast remain possible, so be sure to check back for updates!

Storms seem to be waning in intensity as they approach Indiana. Meh
