UPDATE: A Cinnabon worker in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin, erupted into a racist tirade against a Black Somali Muslim couple who had simply asked for extra caramel on their order. The woman hurled slurs, mocked their accents, and declared she was “proudly racist” as the couple recorded the encounter. The video spread rapidly, drawing widespread condemnation and swift local backlash.
Cinnabon later confirmed the employee had been terminated by the franchise owner, calling her behavior completely unacceptable. The Somali couple, shaken by the experience, launched a fundraiser to help with legal and emotional support costs, though their campaign has raised only a modest amount despite national attention.
Supporters of the fired employee, however, created their own fundraiser on a conservative crowdfunding site, and donations poured in. That campaign now sits at $95,727, fueled largely by users claiming she was unfairly punished and should be rewarded for
“standing her ground.” The speed and scale of the donations stunned observers watching both campaigns grow side by side.
Amid the flood of support, the former Cinnabon worker has now announced she will be retiring, saying the financial windfall has allowed her to step away from employment entirely. Her announcement has intensified debate over how online outrage can flip into unexpected financial gains for people at the center of hate-speech controversies.
