Spending time today with ’s weighty first book, Every Object Has A Ritual. Excerpt from her opening text:
“These were not just ridiculous imitations of sacred ceremonial elements. They were artifacts themselves, objects of a culture that can’t seem to stop flattening Indigenous identities. I had been given a ritual.”
Kearney began this work as part of her thesis at ; we saw it again while we and Selena were participating in the online reviews in 2022. The book released in conjunction with a solo exhibition at .gallery in Seattle in 2023. Selena Kearney completed an MFA through earlier this year.
In 2024 we fulfilled a second major goal with this publication (the first goal being its existence). With the research support of we sent books across the US to K-12 schools still bearing Native mascots.
This book reminds us that we have choices to make in how we respond to our lived experiences. A valuable reminder.
