a moment to mark world photography day (though we hold jan 7 within, why not celebrate this language in the world, any way and any day?).

Verisimilitude (a word we love appropriate to photographs)—‘the appearance of truth.’ Mystery. Wonder. Confusion. Delight. His stories and her stories and our stories. And craft.

That lil jag at the top is not a film notch but a splice. That figure to the right has never been included in extant prints. This negative undoes a 100-year assumption of a portrait.

Long may we ponder photography 🔥💗💚🔥🤩

India’s Independence Day (August 15, 1947) also initiated Partition, still one of the largest and most devastating mass migrations in modern history.

I grew up knowing nothing about either, though my mother and her family were living in Bangalore (south India) at the time, themselves refugees from the Japanese occupation of Burma during WWII. Mom was 12 then. She never spoke of that time, and now does not remember it at all. Within a year or two of Independence/Partition they returned to Burma—because of the unrest? Because Burma gained independence in 1948? I will never know. Histories & mysteries that swirl in me still.

We published Annu Matthew’s series Open Wound, which focuses on the impact of Partition, in her midcareer survey The Answers Take Time.

Though I’ve given my mom a few of our publications because they were important to me, Annu’s is the only book she ever asked for. I’m so glad Annu made this work and we were able to share it.

It’s been a very full week+ at Puritan Press / Superior Packaging & Finishing as we’ve brought three Minor Matters books AND a very special project with AMENT and Ames Bros (in pre-sales with Pearl Jam as of today) into existence.

Steve2, Bill2, Jay2, Sammy, Dave, Bobby, Kevin, Paul, Wayne, Mark, Jimmy, Kurt, & the one & only Donny + more have burned the early morning & midnight oil to get these books right. This is an exceptional house with sheetfed (and roll-to-sheet!) presses & Smythe-sewn binding, foil, and fancy finishing all in one. We’ve created & solved challenges together this week, and can’t WAIT for you to hold the fruits of this collective labor. 🙏🏾💗🙏🏾

We’ve officially entered the second half of the year, according to the sun, anyway….and there’s LOTS to do to finish the three books headed to Puritan Press to be printed!

Today our 2026 minor matters mentee Mckenna spent four hours diligently measuring Janet Neuhauser’s silver prints for sizing. 💗💗💗

Been working on title pages for Margeaux Walter’s book…researching past titles is an important step!

Koplin Del Rio is hosting a conversation between MM and our author Eirik Johnson, and we’ll be meandering through pages & histories and our relationships to books and to photo-objects.

Michelle here….Happy Loving Day. A year after my parents were married, their marriage was legal in all fifty states! All thanks to a quiet couple in Virginia and the Supreme Court. 🙏🏾😳💪 🙏🏾
