I had heard Pat Black’s name countless times over the years, but had never crossed paths with him until this years Orchid Labor Day party. He’s uncle and I used to skate and film with Meetch here and there. Pat was ripping nonstop all day and also took some no-regard-for-your-body type slams. It was a pleasure to watch. As I slowly make way through my archive, sometimes a clip pops into my head and I realize I don’t have the original tape. It happens. Some tapes were sent off in the early days and never returned. Some are most likely in the Shortys archive (wherever that is). Case in point: Frank Hirata half-cabbed the Skatezone pyramid and I knew I filmed it but I’ve already gone through all the 1991 tapes so I knew I didn’t have it. I hit up Frank to see if he remembered which video it was in and he immediately called out Sims “2nd Coming”. This was the first stuff I ever filmed that made it into an actual video. Original tape? Who knows where it is or what else is on it. Stoked to see these clips though after 30+ years. The coolest parallel about all this is that Sims Skateboards was founded in Santa Barbara in 1976. Thanks Frank!

When I first showed up to The Orchid Labor Day Contest, there was hardly anyone there but the ladies were already ripping the ramp. There were definitely a few stand-outs and I was immediately impressed by this 11 year old casually blasting frontside one-foots over the hip. No prob. She had a deep bag of tricks for a youngster. I asked her if she wanted to shoot the one-foot and she said yes. First try, and first photo of the day. Swipe to see the switch blunt she did in the same run. One run and done. I remember Smolik sizing this one up while filming for Fulfill. Tree needed some serious work. It’s still doable, but I imagine since it’s in such a high-falutin area, if you trimmed those branches you’d probably end up going to directly to jail… don’t pass go.
