When I was in Jr. High I lived on a long steep hill in Los Osos, CA. It’s where I learned to skate. 83/84. Cutting back and forth on the wide road. Carving in and out of driveways. And then when I felt like I was in the right spot, I bombed the rest of it. Progressively bombing from higher up as time went on.

My brother, Ian, is six years younger than me. At the time I was like 13 so you can do the math. I usually spent the holidays and summers at my moms in the Santa Ynez Valley. While I was away on one of these occasions, somehow, my brother and his friends got ahold of a “Flexible Flyer”. Apparently he t tried to bomb the same hill and lost control. Now I don’t know if you guys know what Flexible Flyer is but those things are dangerous! You fking lay on your stomach face first. Smdh. All the s**t I got for skating and my family is like, “sure Ian, go for it!” 😂 He ended up in the hospital but lived to fight another day. Swipe to see the weapon of choice.

Everyone wish my brother a happy birthday and if you’re ever on the Big Island make sure you stop by his restaurants and to say hi. Happy Birthday big bro 😉 (on aside note, the living legend Russ Pope lived at the bottom of the street at this time. Yes our roots run deep.)

Your humble HATCHMM editor in chief, with a Backside Pivot from a few days ago.

I’ve made it a little bit of a mission lately to get photos on certain spots around town that I’ve been looking at forever. I drive by this micro-quarter almost everyday. It’s looks so rad from the road. It was much harder to skate than I imagined. I wanted the pivot to fakie but I just don’t think it’s possible? Scraped about a quarter inch off my tail just getting into this. Coming in backwards was a no-go. But it was fun nonetheless. Pretty wild ride coming out of this thing…avoiding cracks and rock walls. I know someone could launch off of it and boardslide that rail behind me. Photo by the only gopher I know that shoots photos -

We pull up to West Park the other day. Kresky gets out of the car and starts rolling around. In less than a minute he’s over at the pool looking in the deep. He pushes his board over the coping and drops in. One backside carve in the shallow and then just murders a nasty frontside grind in the deep. Couple more grinds and he pops out. I mean, I don’t put anything past him, but that was insane. No stretching, no warm up. Rarely skates pools at all these days. NEVER skated this park or pool before. First run. 64 years old with a hip replacement. The Natural, Mike Kresky. Frankie showed up with his daughter. I got some revs. Epic sesh.

I love hanging out with this guy. The first time I met Frankie I was probably 15? Over the years I’ve had many adventures with Frankie. Every single fu***ng time, he’s done something amazing. Literally, EVER TIME. So so so happy for him to be inducted into the tomorrow. Cheers my brother.
