Where is the $600 billion a year in marketing money going if not to media outlets who are laying off staff or closing for good?

A new episode of the Drowned in Sound podcast just dropped with marketing expert Darren Hemmings who works for clients like the brilliant Warp and Domino labels. We discuss how he spends money to sell things like these Run The Jewels cat bowls. He’s very open and honest, and even shares a fair bit of knowledge that most artists and small labels will find useful.

It’s a really illuminating conversation about the creator economy and ponders whether the media and independent music ecosystem needs to rethink how money is spent.

When in your day / week are you most likely to listen to a podcast?

None of the studies I’ve read have coherent patterns.

For me, I often fall asleep to US politics podcasts like Pod Save America, because it’s engaging enough to shut up my own thoughts but it’s far so away from my reality that I don’t care enough to stay awake.

Early evenings when I’m cooking or pottering around I often listen to The Newsagents, Radio 4’s The Media Show, Shaun Keaveny’s new one, NY Times’ The Daily and then a range of one off episodes of pods about music, tech or culture like Kara Swisher, Reply All or Decoder Ring.

When I’m driving I really like longer interview formats like Ezra Klein. Or some of Tortoise’s long form investigative pods.

Whenever I need a quick thoughtful walk it’s usually MusicAlly’s dose of insight into the music industry.

2 grassroots venues a week are closing, and yet Barcelona FC sponsoring Spotify are writing op-eds for the Daily Mail about their battle with Apple. They’re promoting it as an advert on Elon Musk’s Twitter.

Meanwhile, we spoke to the Big Issue’s culture editor about their campaign to help save venues.

Music recommendations, industry insights and advice for musicians features in the newsletter from one of the original music blogs, which was established back in 2000. Click to read Drowned in Sound, by Sean Adams, a Substack publication with thousands of subscribers.
