Panned at Cannes and dismissed by critics, Lynch’s prequel to the TV series has since been embraced as one of his most haunting works—a raw, devastating look at Laura Palmer’s final days.

Fun fact: Quentin Tarantino famously walked out of its Cannes premiere, saying Lynch had “disappeared so far up his own ass,” while today the film is embraced as essential to the PEAKS mythology.
