One of the aspects that has turned HACKERS into a cult classic is the characters’ iconic fashion choices, courtesy of veteran costume designer Roger K Burton.

From Seditionaries parachute shirts and Quiksilver rash guards to bo***ge trousers and Vivienne Westwood “half-American football, half-medieval” armour jackets, every look feels like it was ripped from a cyberpunk runway.

These original Polaroids from the costume fittings prove just how ahead of their time these styles really were.

In our new episode, we trace how Rafael Moreu embedded himself in hacker culture to write the script, how director Iain Softley joined the project, and how a young Angelina Jolie helped define the cyberpunk aesthetic of the ’90s.

Jack in and discover the real story behind this neon-drenched cult classic. 🎧⚡️

THE LAWNMOWER MAN hit theaters on March 6, 1992, and audiences showed up. The film pulled in around $32 million at the box office—more than double its budget—and became an early ‘90s sci-fi sleeper hit.

This surreal techno-thriller introduced moviegoers to virtual reality before most people even had a home computer. Its success helped launch director Brett Leonard’s career and paved the way for his next dive into digital dystopia: the 1995 cyber-action flick VIRTUOSITY, starring Denzel Washington and a very unhinged Russell Crowe.

Check out this original TV spot from the film’s release—and then hit play on the latest episode of Cinema Shock to hear how The Lawnmower Man hacked its way into sci-fi history.
