NETWORK CHALLENGES WILL CONTINUE UNTIL POWER SUPPLY IMPROVES

Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati says the persistent network challenges plaguing mobile providers across Zambia will continue until the national power supply is stabilized.

Delivering a ministerial statement in the National Assembly, Mr. Mutati has directly linked the communication breakdowns to the ongoing load-shedding.

He explains that the current power being supplied by ZESCO is insufficient for telecommunication towers because while they have backup power, they were only designed to operate for a limited number of hours after a power cut.

PARLIAMENT APPROVES KANCHIBIYA MP SUNDAY CHANDA’S MOTION TO INTRODUCE OPTIONAL ACCESS TO LUMP SUM RETIREMENT BENEFITS UNDER NAPSA

Parliament has approved a Private Member’s Motion moved by Kanchibiya Member of Parliament, Sunday Chanda, seeking the introduction of optional access to lump sum retirement benefits under the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA).

The motion, seconded by Mufulira MP Golden Mwila, calls on government to reform the retirement benefit structure under NAPSA to allow contributors the option of accessing lump sum payments upon retirement.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Chanda clarified that the proposal was not about withdrawing all pension savings, but rather about introducing choice and financial freedom for retirees to use their savings to build homes, start businesses, or restore dignity after years of contribution.

Meanwhile, Minister of Labour and Social Security, Brenda Tambatamba, expressed government support for the motion, noting that current NAPSA reforms are already aligned with the proposal.

She added that her ministry is exploring additional measures to enhance access to pension benefits as part of broader social security reforms.

Members of Parliament overwhelmingly supported the motion, acknowledging its importance in promoting financial independence and flexibility for retirees.
