Health Yatu: Why your mouth smells like a pit of garbage!!

Let’s be honest, nobody wants to be the person in the room who brings new meaning to “fresh air.” A stinky mouth can make even the bravest souls reconsider breathing entirely. But here’s the wild part: the main culprit behind the stench usually doesn’t even realize it! Former minister Chishimba Kambwili summed it up perfectly in Bemba, “umwine wachisushi, tomfwa ukununka,” which basically means, “If you’re the source of the stink, you’re the last to notice.” Blame it on your brain, which gets bored with the same old whiff and tunes it out not to avoid some nice going scent. This is called Olfactory adaptation, a survival instinct, that helps the brain to switch to new odor, alerting it of changes in the environment.

Let’s zoom in on one of the world’s most awkward superpowers: bad breath (or, if you’re feeling like a medical nerd, halitosis). Halitosis sounds like a Greek hero, but really, it’s just your mouth sending out SOS signals. Everyone gets it, but nobody wants it.

What causes this unwanted aroma?

The reigning champ is poor oral hygiene. If you skip brushing or flossing, leftover food parties in your mouth until it starts to decompose. Think of it as a tiny trash can eventually, it’s going to wreak! The reason is that you quickly remove it out of the house.

But before you shame the nearest mouth offender, remember that bad breath can have many secret accomplices:

Gum diseases: Say cheese to bacteria!

Dehydration: Drink water unless you want your saliva to go on a holiday.

Alcohol and smoking: Not just bad for your liver or lungs, they give your breath an edge too.

Medications and illnesses: Diabetes, tonsil infections, even some viruses like herpes or HPV love to leave their mark (or scent).

Certain foods: Onions and fish, we’re looking at you.
Tonsil stones: Ever coughed up a foul-smelling pebble? That’s a tonsil stone, not buried treasure.

Fun fact, Bad breath is the third most common reason people visit the dentist, right after tooth decay and gum disease. So yes, you’re not alone on breath patrol!

So
What Can You Do?

First step, be brave. Ask a trusted friend if your breath could knock out a rhino. If yes, book an appointment with a dentist. They’ll poke around (gently) and figure out the true villain behind the scent.

If it’s standard-issue bad breath, here’s your battle plan, Brush and floss like your social life depends on it (because sometimes, it does). Scrub your tongue, germs love it there. Drink lots of water, don’t let dehydration turn your mouth into the Sahara. See your dentist regularly for a professional cleaning.

A gentle warning, Mouthwash might seem like a quick fix, but it sometimes just puts a band-aid over the problem. In some cases, it could make things worse, kind of like spraying perfume on a dirty gym sock.

And if you’re always worried people are ducking for cover when you talk, but your breath checks out, you might have halitophobia: a fear of bad breath, not actual bad breath. Science says up to 72% of worried breath-checkers don’t even have a problem!

So, keep it clean, stay hydrated, and don’t stress, just remember to check with a buddy before you dedicate your next big speech to onions.

Police detain Sinda mother, son after discovery of 14-year-old son's skeleton in bush

POLICE in Sinda District of Eastern Province have apprehended missing teen's family after discovery of the boy's suspected skeleton near his village.
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/19BBEg5VH9/

According to Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba, Jason 14, was last seen in February when he finished work as a herdsboy for Aliness Banda, 53.

Mweemba narrates to TV Yatu that, after working for Aliness, Jason returned home, however, the following day, he failed to show up for piecework as a herdsboy.

He says that when Aliness inquired about Jason, the teenage boy's mother, Deliya Mwale, 56, said he had travelled to Mozambique.

Mweemba narrates that, the mother alongside the son, Moses Phiri, 30, did not submit a missing person report to the Police .

He says after some months, Jason's uncle, Charles Mwale visited his sister Deliya, where he heard startling rumours about the suspicious disappearance of his nephew.

He says when Mwale asked about the boy's whereabouts, his sister and nephew gave unsatisfactory answers, prompting him to compel the family to open a missing person report with the Police.

Police thereafter opened an inquiry into the vanishing of Jason, and tasked the family to trace his whereabouts as they carried out an independent search.

Two weeks after, the family reported that they had failed to find the boy.

Yesterday, acting on fresh information from members of the public, Police rushed to a scene where skeletal remains including a skull, hip bones, ribs, and a section of spine where discovered.

Critical to this identification, was a pair of torn jeans recovered at the scene, matching clothing Jason was last seen wearing.

He says the remains have been released to the family for burial, with instructions to mark the grave for potential future exhumation and forensic examination.

While citing the strange behaviour of Deliya Mwale and Moses Phiri, particularly their initial failure to report Jason missing for months and their misleading explanation to his employer – police have detained the pair.

He says they face potential criminal charges as the investigation into Jason's suspected murder intensifies.

Police also stated the detention was necessary to protect Mwale and Phiri from a hostile mob that gathered in the village, convinced of their involvement in the teenager's death.

Jason went missing somewhere February or March, 2025.

PRAYER YATU

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the gift of life and the blessing of a new week. We ask for Your peace to fill our hearts, homes, and nations. May this week be one of joy, favor, and divine guidance.

Lord, open doors of prosperity and good opportunities whether in business, careers, or relationships. For those seeking jobs, let the right doors open; for those in business, grant wisdom and success; and for those seeking marriage, bring forth godly and loving partners.

Bless every step we take and keep us safe under Your grace. May this week bring breakthroughs, good news, and testimonies.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

We are back our fellow Insomians.

Our sister from last nights post has thanked all of you for the advice and encouragement on her son's autistic condition.
She says may God bless you all. Your comments and sentiments have lightened their fears and now looking at the condition in a different perspective that is positive.

Today's issue from our Inbox.

Admin I need help from members of the public. My daughter has been gaining weight uncontrollably despite our attempts to monitor her diet and eating habits.
She is 13 years and we were told by the hospital that the normal weight for a girl of her age is between 29.2 kg and 45.4 kg, but she is weighing 64KG.
We are worried. Any advice will really help.

Jemax's 50 million streams on Boomplay go in water

ARTISTE, Jemax has joined the bandwagon of Zambian artistes revealing they have not been making money off Boomplay streams.

In his post this evening, Jemax expresses disappointment at the music streaming site saying efforts to get answers from the company have proved futile.

"Am dissapointed with Boomplay. After getting over 50Million streams on the platform for my BOOGEYMAN ALBUM, I have never gotten any payment. We have tried a countless number of times with my team to contact their support portal via emails and much more yet nothing fruitful has ever come out," Jemax States .

He adds, "I demand for ANSWERS and am calling upon relevant bodies such as ZAM, NAC and Ministry of ARTS to intervene. Its sad to learn that actually most artists are being owed hefty amounts of moneys by Boomplay yet no one has been given a valid excuse."
