Earlier this year I finally received some recognition for the work I have been doing here in Borikén for the past 12 years. I had the honor of appearing on the local TeleOnce morning program En La Mañana. I posted the full interview on my YouTube. Link in bio.

I am grateful for that opportunity. Everyone there was so friendly and kind. Many people do not know about my work because it rarely gets shared, but I have never done this for fame or recognition. Still, I want my message to reach more people so that the seeds I plant can bloom.

One day I hope to have a new car and finally do the island-wide tour I have dreamed of ever since being shot in the head. I want to go everywhere, meet people, and inspire them to see that we are the change. 🌿

A principios de este año finalmente recibí algo de reconocimiento por el trabajo que he estado haciendo aquí en Borikén durante los últimos 12 años. Estoy agradecido por esa oportunidad. Todos allí fueron muy amables y cordiales. Muchas personas no conocen mi trabajo porque rara vez se comparte, pero nunca he hecho esto por fama o reconocimiento. Aun así, quiero que mi mensaje llegue a más personas para que las semillas que planto puedan florecer.

Here I am playing dress-up again. This is my record of existence. Let me tell you a bit about myself. I’m Jivan, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, and I’ve lived in Borikén for 15 years. This place has been my classroom and sanctuary where I’ve grown, changed, and reconnected deeply to nature and my wild, primal self.

I don’t identify with any race, nationality, country, or flags. I have developed my own philosophy on how I see things.

For 9 years now, I’ve been barefoot, vegan, and sober. I grow my own food on my off-grid farm, powered by just one solar panel and a single battery. My life is an ascetic journey like a modern monk, stripping away layers of conformity to find my true wings and learn to fly higher.

Here on social media, YouTube, and my blog, I document this path. I no longer live to impress. I live to inspire. I hope what I share lights something in you.

For 12 years I have carried my signs to many beaches, handing out free bags and cleaning the shore. It took me time to return after being shot in the head 6 years ago for defending a beach but here I am, stronger than ever, still planting the seeds of change. I walk from one side to the other holding my signs in front of people and I can see how much cleaner the beaches stay. I am fueled by the neglect of many but I do this for the love of Borikén and to protect the ocean.

I have a GoFundMe because I am raising funds to get a new car. My goal is to travel across the island, reach every beach, keep doing this work and place my signs everywhere. Llevo 12 años llevando mis letreros a muchas playas, repartiendo bolsas gratis y limpiando la costa. Me tomó tiempo volver a hacerlo después de que me dispararan en la cabeza hace 6 años por defender una playa pero aquí estoy sembrando una vez más las semillas del cambio. Camino de un lado a otro mostrando mis letreros frente a las personas y he visto cómo las playas se mantienen más limpias. Ready to walk the beaches with my signs and clean up. Many think I love doing this. I don’t. It is exhausting. It is not easy with this heat and the wind blowing against me. But I do it because I feel it is my obligation to care for these beautiful places. I am compelled by love for Borikén. I see the difference I am making. The beaches stay cleaner. It is a shame I have to carry signs for that to happen. But I hope the seeds I plant continue to bloom. Please take my challenge of leaving the beaches cleaner than we found them. Let’s be that change.

Listo para caminar por las playas con mis carteles y limpiar. Muchos piensan que me encanta hacer esto. No es así. Es agotador. No es fácil con este calor y el viento soplando en mi contra. Pero lo hago porque siento que es mi obligación cuidar estos lugares hermosos. Me mueve el amor por Borikén. Veo la diferencia que estoy logrando. Las playas permanecen más limpias. Es una pena que tenga que llevar carteles para que eso suceda. Pero espero que las semillas que siembro sigan floreciendo. Por favor acepta mi reto de dejar las playas más limpias de lo que las encontramos. Seamos ese cambio.

Please share to help get this challenge to more people. It is simple. The very first thing we should do when we arrive at a beach is pick up any trash we find instead of sitting next to it and ignoring it like I see so many out here doing. It does not have to be much, but if we all do our part, we can change the world. Change starts with our own two hands. Let us preserve the magic and beauty of Borikén and our world.

Lo primero que deberíamos hacer al llegar a una playa es recoger cualquier basura que encontremos en lugar de sentarnos junto a ella e ignorarla como veo que muchos hacen aquí. No tiene que ser mucho, pero si todos hacemos nuestra parte podemos cambiar el mundo. El cambio empieza con nuestras propias manos. Preservemos la magia y la belleza de Borikén y de nuestro mundo.

That has been my journey. I have walked this path for a long time, peeling back the many layers of conformity and rediscovering who I truly am underneath.

We are shaped by our environment. Culture teaches us to blend in, to become like everyone else, and in doing so we lose our individuality. Many of us never question this because it is easier to stay the same than to grow.

But in nature, in solitude, I found my higher self. I began removing my masks and the work is never done.

Every day is a new chance to notice the masks we still wear. A new chance to become a better version of ourselves. A day to spread our wings and fly higher. A day to free ourselves from the many shackles that hold us down.
