29/07/2025

Arab Media & Society, the journal of the Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism in the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the American University in Cairo announces the publication of its 38th issue on the subject of “Media & Conflict.” The impact on the Arab world of the multitude of conflicts that have marked the region for decades, whether those of occupation, conquest, or civil strife, cannot be overstated. The regional and international media landscapes have no small role in how these conflicts are perceived, understood, and acted upon, both by domestic and global audiences. The evolution of the media landscape has, in recent years, transformed public attitudes, as the chasm between what is propagated by state-controlled media and the often graphic images circulated across digital media platforms by a litany of actors has continued to grow. Today, we see this perhaps most viscerally in the coverage of the war on Gaza, but it also manifests in the relatively sparse coverage of other regional conflicts in Sudan, Syria, and Yemen; or in the divergent patterns of coverage as one compares narratives from Ukraine to those emerging from our region.

Combined, this issue examines the complex issues of conflict and war through a mediated lens. It includes a diverse array of scholarship from across the region and beyond addressing the Israeli/Palestinian conflict through academic discourse, the media’s framing of women, and journalists’ perceptions. It offers scholarship on the coverage of the Syrian crisis both on the ground and through digital media content impacting Syrian refugees in Türkiye. It analyses hyperreality and fake news across conflicts in the contexts of Ukraine and Palestine, and examines social media newsroom integration in local conflict reporting in Oman. Finally, it includes social network analysis of transnational protests in opposition to the war in Gaza. The issue represents a diversity of approaches to the study of media in the context of regional conflict by both Arab and international scholars. Arab Media & Society is an open access Scopus-indexed journal. You can read this issue in its entirety at: https://www.arabmediasociety.com/post_issue/issue-38-summer-fall-2024/.
