The LWFC approved a Notice of Intent (NOI) to revise and update civil restitution values for the illegal take of fish and wildlife species. The action came during the commission’s June meeting this past Tuesday in Baton Rouge.

Mark your calendars and get your rods and reels ready! The Kisatchie National Forest is excited to announce the 2025 Youth Fishing Derby dates: May 31 for Valentine Lake and Bombing Range Pond, and June 7 for Stuart Lake, Anderson Pond and Government Pond.

Next time you see a snake in your yard and ask about it on NextDoor app but no one answers right away. Here ya go, there's a poster for "What snake is this?"

With spring in full swing and temperatures rising, snake sightings are becoming more common across Louisiana. Don’t be alarmed—most of the 47 native snake species in our state are nonvenomous and play a vital role in keeping our ecosystems healthy by controlling rodent, insect, and even fish populations.

🐍𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝟳 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮'𝘀 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗻𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀.
👀Snakes are more active April–July, especially during cooler parts of the day in summer.
🚫𝗦𝗻𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝘁𝘀—they’d rather avoid us!
🛑If you see a snake:
- 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲—it will likely move on.
- 𝗗𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘁—removing snakes may increase rodent problems.
- 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗳 𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱—many harmless snakes mimic venomous ones to defend themselves.
✅𝗦𝗻𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀
- Keep your yard free of debris, overgrown vegetation, and rodent attractants
- Seal up holes around your home’s foundation
-Trim tree branches near your roof
- Keep grass short and maintain clear borders around your home

🟢 22 Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs)
🟢 28 public lakes
🟢 1 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property

𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗹 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟯!🐿 🚨
Why did the squirrel cross the road? Well, it started to but changed its mind, then changed its mind again, and again…

You can help less squirrels cross the road by taking part in squirrel hunting season opening May 3 (in most parts of Louisiana) through May 25.

𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘁:
👉Basic hunting license required.
👉 17 and under are not required to have a youth license to hunt squirrels.
👉 Bag limit 3 per day with a possession limit of 9.
👉 Hunting opportunity available on many LDWF WMAs.

𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀:
To access a WMA, you must have either a WMA Access Permit, Senior Hunting/Fishing License, Louisiana Sportsman’s Paradise License or Lifetime Hunting/Fishing License.

🌲Spring squirrel season is closed on the Kisatchie National Forest, some national wildlife refuges, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property and some state WMAs.
