A Loft/SUNY Fredonia original out today. Alx B - Ask Me to Stay. Tracked back in May or so. Acoustic and drums live, overdubs from there. Piano is Mason Hall 2019 grand, engineered by Ian Carl.

Well hello there, little buddy. Serendipitous am I to share another SUNY Fredonia project, engineered by the seat of my pants with broken down truck consuming my psyche, and yet to have been unloaded or set up from the Plymouth K**b party late the night before. I left a good pool of coolant at Country Fair...

I was delighted at the prospect of moving these eager lads in my impractical people hauler Nissan; as surprised as any when Ian agreed to ride in the bed. This made for a jovial addition to the video production, captured by Chris' old school handheld.

With the exception of one brief overdub, the music was tracked live; guitar cab out on the deck. The rig is my Peavey ValveKing, clean channel, through a stereo miked open back 2x12 cab. Pedals are pictured at the end. Stereo room sound was added to the bass and guitar both. Chris brought up his Blue & Olive badge Pioneer, which surely and mysteriously has immensely more "rasp" than my dad's '65, and the ability for much higher tuning. I suspect the shell is maple, rather than mahogany. Ludwig guys, please enlighten me.

Hey folks. I am honored to share this project with you.

Some hot and sticky September evening up in the Loft, a new friend and collaborator B-Roll Kazper brought up a team of eager young players and a videographer/collaborator friend Collin, keen on a live-in-studio track. Jazz-Rap. SUNY students. Intriguing!

Indeed, we got the magic on the third take, the whole band to a click track, the bleed from which you can hear at the end during some candid interaction. Their professionalism and sheer chops just absolutely blew me away, and all of my iced coffee fueled scrambling to engineer, mix headphones, and run an additional camera were worth it to capture such virtuosity, and in such a tight space. This is certainly one of my proudest and most immersive works in drum recording ['72 Rogers, 60's Slingerland Hollywood Ace]. I have no idea how that happens, truthfully. In recording, you constantly shape your tools and skills, your room; yet it takes the spirit of the performer, and the weight of the songwriting to truly carry the sound of the moment, and bring it bursting out your speakers. It is the producer's role to meld the two, and to nurture a judgement free and open environment, to allow the artist to be themself. The moments this creates are surely what keeps us coming back. I am glad to be working with so many students lately, and hope to continue this newfound path.
