Legendary synth player and producer and one-half of Soft Cell, Dave Ball, has died aged 66.

His bandmate Marc Almond confirmed Ball had "passed away peacefully in his sleep" on Tuesday (October 21).

While no cause of death has been confirmed, Almond shared that Ball "had been ill for a long while and his health had been in slow decline over recent years."

Best known for their 1981 single, ‘Tainted Love’, alongside their 1983-released debut album 'Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret’, Soft Cell helped to popularise the synth-pop movement of the early '80s.

Cited as a leading inspiration behind musicians such as Charli xcx and The Pet Shop Boys, Soft Cell have had a lasting influence on British music; a YouGov poll currently lists the duo as the 9th greatest dance and electronic act from the UK.

Almond and Ball’s last performance together was a headline set at Rewind Festival in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire in August.

"Thank you Dave for being an immense part of my life and for the music you gave me," Almond statement continued. "I wouldn't be where I am without you."
